UPS’37PrinciplesforManagingPeopleAwide-ranginglookatthecompany’sworkforcemanagementpractices,includingpromotingfromwithinandlimitingtheemploymentofrelatives.TheguidelinesbelowspelloutUPS’visionformanagingitsworkforce.They’repartofalargerpolicybookgiventothecompany’smanagementteam,whichalsoincludesprinciplesforhandlingcustomersandshareholders.WeBuildOurOrganizationAroundPeopleThestrengthofourcompanyisitspeople,workingtogetherwithacommonpurpose.Althoughmethods,equipment,andproceduresareimportant,andweconstantlystrivetoimprovethem,ourmostvaluableassetsareloyalandcapablepeople.Weseek,throughtheuseofourimpartialemploymentandpromotionpractices,tohaveadiverseworkforce.Ourorganizationisstrengthenedbycapableindividualswithdiversebackgrounds.Weassignresponsibilitiesanddutiestosecurethefullbenefitofanindividual’stalentsandabilitiesandtoprovideeachpersonwithanopportunitytodevelopfurther.Allourpeople,andthejobstheyperform,canmakeimportantcontributionstoourcompany.Wemaintainanenvironmentthatenablesthemtoobtainpersonalsatisfactionfromtheirwork.WePlaceGreatValueonDiversityWevaluethediversitythatexistswithinourworkforce,ourcustomers,thosewhoprovidegoodsandservicestoourcompany,andthecommunitiesinwhichwedobusiness.Managersareresponsibleforcreatingaworkplaceoffairness,dignity,andrespectforallemployees--anenvironmentofinclusion,encouragingparticipation,andthebesteffortofeveryone.Thediversityofourworkforceresultsfromasincereefforttohireandretaindedicatedpeoplefromthecommunitiesinwhichweoperate.Westrivetoenhanceourreputationasanorganizationthatvaluesdiversecustomersaswellassuppliersandvendors.Inaddition,wesupportandworkcloselywithorganizationsthatbelievefairemploymentpracticesareintegraltoasuccessfulbusiness.WeTreatOurPeopleFairlyandWithoutFavoritismWebelievethatimpartialityisthefoundationofaloyal,cooperativeworkgroup.Wewanttotreatourpeopleasindividuals,withoutcausingtheperceptionofspecialtreatment.Wehavetheresponsibilitytoavoidanyrelationshipthatmayresultinactualorperceivedfavoritism.WeMaintainanEnvironmentFreeofDiscriminationandSexualHarassmentAllUPSemployeeshavetherighttoworkinanenvironmentfreeofanytypeofharassmentanddiscrimination.Sexualharassmentanddiscriminationwillnotbetolerated.ManagersandsupervisorsareresponsibleforensuringthattheyandtheiremployeesunderstandandcomplywithUPSguidelinesandmaintainaprofessionalworkenvironment.Thatresponsibilityincludesreportingincidentstotheappropriatemanagementpeople.WeInsistUponIntegrityinOurPeopleWeunderstandthatintegrityisfundamentaltohowwerunourbusinessandessentialtomaintaincompliancewithourpoliciesandlegalrequirements.Operatingwithintegritymeansweprovideanatmosphereinwhichourpeoplecanperformtheirjobsinanethicalmanner.Wepresentourcompanyhonestlytoemployeesand,inturn,expectthemtobehonestwithus.Weexpecthonestyfromourpeopleinalltheirduties,includingtheirhandlingofmoney,merchandise,andpropertywithwhichtheyareentrusted.Weinsistonintegrityinthepreparationandapprovalofallreports.Wealsoexpectourpeopletobehonestintheirassessmentofthemselves,suchasthetimeandcommitmenttheygivetotheirjobperformance,thefairnesstheyseekintheirdealingswithothers,ortheobjectivitytheyuseinevaluatingtheirowncontributions.Thegreatmajorityofourpeopleareofhighmoralcharacter.However,whenwedodiscoveradishonestpersoninourorganization,wedealwiththatindividualquicklyandfirmly.Forourcompanytobeknownforitsintegrity,eachoneofusmustmeethighstandards.WePromoteFromWithinGenerally,wefillmanagementpositionsfromwithinourorganization.Indoingsowetakecaretoincludeforconsiderationandnotoverlookqualifiedpeoplewhosepresentjobsmaymakethemlessnoticeablethanotheremployees.Wefillavacancyfromtheoutsidewhenwecannotlocateoneofourownpeoplewhohastheprofessionalortechnicalskillsrequiredforaparticularassignment.Advancementisbasedonindividualmeritandperformance.Allwhoperformtheirtaskscapablyandhavethecapacitytoassumegreaterresponsibilityareeligible.Observingequalopportunityguidelines,weselectthosewhoseembestfittedtotheposition.Allmanagersandsupervisorsareresponsibleforencouraginganddevelopingcapablepeople,notonlyfortheirowngroupsbutalsoforopeningselsewherewithinourorganization.Weactivelysearchforsuchcapablepeopleandgivethemopportunitiestosucceed.WeMaintainaSpiritofTeamworkThroughoutourorganization,wecapitalizeontheadvantagesofworkingtogetherinaninformalmanner.Althoughdefinedresponsibilitiesareassignedtospecificindividualsinourcompany,weactasacooperativeteam.Combinedefforts,whichhelpanypartofourorganization,servetostrengthenourentireorganization.WeCompensateOurPeopleFairlyOurcompensationprogramskeeppacewithtoday'schangingbusinessneedsandcomparefavorablywiththoseprogramsinothercompanies.Ouremployees’compensationincludesmorethansalaryalone.Whenconsideringpayrangesandnegotiatingwageagreements,weweighthevalueofthetotalcompensationpackage.Wealsoconsiderplansthatgiveparticipantsastakeinthefinancialsuccessofthecompanyandofferwaystoenhancesavings.WePromotetheGoodHealthofOurPeopleWeprovideabenefitspackageandotherprogramsthathelppromotegoodhealthandwell-beingamongem
