TransmissionofmaterialinthisreleaseisembargoeduntilUSDL-11-03508:30a.m.(EDT)Thursday,March17,2011Technicalinformation:(202)691-7000•Reed.Steve@bls.gov�:(202)691-5902�PressOffice@bls.govCONSUMERPRICEINDEX–FEBRUARY2011TheConsumerPriceIndexforAllUrbanConsumers(CPI-U)increased0.5percentinFebruaryonaseasonallyadjustedbasis,theU.S.BureauofLaborStatisticsreportedtoday.Overthelast12months,theallitemsindexincreased2.1percentbeforeseasonaladjustment.Thoughtheseasonallyadjustedincreaseintheallitemsindexwasbroad-based,theenergyindexwasonceagainthelargestcontributor.Thegasolineindexcontinuedtorise,andtheindexforhouseholdenergyturnedupinFebruarywithallofitscomponentspostingincreases.FoodindexesalsocontinuedtoriseinFebruary,withsharpincreasesintheindexesforfreshvegetablesandmeatscontributingtoa0.8percentincreaseinthefoodathomeindex,thelargestsinceJuly2008.TheindexforallitemslessfoodandenergyroseinFebruaryaswell.Mostofitsmajorcomponentspostedincreases,includingtheindexesforshelter,newvehicles,medicalcare,andairlinefares.Theapparelindexwasoneofthefewtodecline.The12-monthchangesinmajorindexescontinuetotrendupward.Theallitemsindexincreased2.1percentforthe12monthsendingFebruary;thefigurewas1.1percentasrecentlyasNovember.The12-monthincreaseintheindexforallitemslessfoodandenergyreached1.1percentinFebruaryafterbeingaslowas0.6percentinOctober.The11.0percentincreaseintheenergyindexisthelargestsinceMay2010,whilethe2.3percentriseinthefoodindexisthelargestsinceMay2009.-0.2-0.10.00.10.20.30.40.5Feb'10MarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDecJanFeb'11Chart1.One-monthpercentchangeinCPIforAllUrbanConsumers(CPI-U),seasonallyadjusted,Feb.2010-Feb.2011Percentchange0.00.00.0-0.1-0.20.30.20.20.20.10.40.40.5-2-Chart2.12-monthpercentchangeinCPIforAllUrbanConsumers(CPI-U),notseasonallyadjusted,Feb.2010-Feb.2011PercentchangeAllitemsAllitemslessfoodandenergy0.60.81.01.21.41.61.82.02.22.4Feb'10MarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDecJanFeb'11-3-ConsumerPriceIndexDataforFebruary2011FoodThefoodindexrose0.6percentinFebruaryafterrising0.5percentinJanuary.Thefoodathomeindex,up0.7percentinJanuary,rose0.8percentinFebruary.Fiveofthesixmajorgrocerystorefoodgroupspostedincreases.Theindexforfruitsandvegetablesincreasedthemost,rising2.2percentasthefreshvegetablesindexincreased6.7percent.Theindexformeats,poultry,fish,andeggsadvanced1.2percentwiththeindexformeatsup1.9percent.Thedairyandrelatedproductsindexincreased0.6percent,asdidtheindexforotherfoodathome.Theindexfornonalcoholicbeverages,whichrose1.5percentinJanuary,advanced0.2percentinFebruary.Theindexforcerealsandbakeryproducts,whichwasunchangedinFebruary,wastheonlymajorgrocerystorefoodgroupnottorise.Overthepast12months,theindexforfoodathomehasrisen2.8percentwithallsixgroupsincreasing.Theindexforfoodawayfromhomerose0.2percentinFebruaryandhasrisen1.6percentoverthepast12months.EnergyTheenergyindexrose3.4percentinFebruaryandhasrisen9.8percentoverthelastthreemonths.Thegasolineindexcontinuedtoincrease,climbing4.7percentinFebruaryaftera3.5percentriseinJanuary.(Beforeseasonaladjustment,gasolinepricesrose2.2percentinFebruary.)Theindexforhouseholdenergy,whichfell0.2percentinJanuary,rose1.3percentinFebruary.Thefueloilindexrose5.8percent,theindexfornaturalgasadvanced3.4percent,andtheelectricityindexincreased0.4percent.Theindexforgasolinehasrisen19.2percentoverthelast12months;thehouseholdenergyindexhasincreased1.4percentoverthatspan,withthefueloilandelectricityindexesrisingbuttheindexfornaturalgasdeclining.AllitemslessfoodandenergyTheindexforallitemslessfoodandenergyrose0.2percentinFebruary,thesameincreaseasinJanuary,withmostofitsmajorcomponentspostingincreases.Theshelterindexrose0.1percentinFebruary,withrentandowners’equivalentrentbothalsorising0.1percent.AfterdeclininginJanuary,thenewvehiclesindexrose1.0percentinFebruary,itslargestincreasesinceOctober2009.Themedicalcareindexrose0.4percentinFebruaryaftera0.1percentincreaseinJanuary.Theindexformedicalcarecommoditiesrose0.7percentandthemedicalcareservicesindexadvanced0.4percent.Theindexforairlinefaresincreased2.1percentinFebruary,itsfourthconsecutivemonthlyincreaseofovertwopercent.Theindexforrecreationrose0.3percent,itssecondstraightmonthlyincrease.Theindexesforhouseholdfurnishingsandoperationsandforusedcarsandtrucksbothedgedup0.1percentinFebruary.Incontrasttotheseincreases,theapparelindexturneddowninFebruary,declining0.9percentafterincreasing1.0percentinJanuary.Theindexforallitemslessfoodandenergyincreased1.1percentoverthelast12months.Theshelterindexhasgoneup0.8percentoverthattimeperiodwiththerentindexup1.1percent.Theindexesforairlinefares,medicalcare,newvehicles,andusedcarsandtruckswereamongtheindexesthatincreasedoverthatspan.Indexesthatdeclinedincludehouseholdfurnishingsandoperations,apparel,andrecreation.-4-NotseasonallyadjustedCPImeasuresTheConsumerPriceIndexforAllUrbanConsumers(CPI-U)increased2.1percentoverthelast12monthstoanindexlevelof221.309(1982-84=100).Forthemonth,theindexincreased0.5percentpriortoseasonaladjustment.TheConsumerPriceIndexforUrbanWageEarners
