WeshallneversurrenderNevertheless,ourthankfulnessattheescapeofourarmyandsomanymen,whoselovedoneshavepassedthroughanagonisingweek,mustnotblindustothefactthatwhathashappenedinFranceandBelgiumisacolossalmilitarydisaster.TheFrencharmyhasbeenweakened,theBelgianarmyhasbeenlost,alargepartofthosefortifiedlinesuponwhichsomuchfaithhadbeenreposedisgone,manyvaluableminingdistrictsandfactorieshavepassedintotheenemy'spossession,thewholeoftheChannelportsareinhishands,withallthetragicconsequencesthatfollowfromthat,andwemustexpectanotherblowtobestruckalmostimmediatelyatusoratFrance.WearetoldthatHerrHitlerhasaplanforinvadingtheBritishIsles.Thishasoftenbeenthoughtofbefore.WhenNapoleonlayatBoulogneforayearwithhisflat-bottomedboatsandhisGrandArmy,hewastoldbysomeone,TherearebitterweedsinEngland.TherearecertainlyagreatmanymoreofthemsincetheBritishExpeditionaryForcereturned.Ihave,myself,fullconfidencethatifalldotheirduty,ifnothingisneglected,andifthebestarrangementsaremade,astheyarebeingmade,weshallproveourselvesoncemoreabletodefendourislandhome,torideoutthestormofwar,andtooutlivethemenaceoftyranny,ifnecessaryforyears,ifnecessaryalone.Atanyrate,thatiswhatwearegoingtotrytodo.ThatistheresolveofHisMajesty'sgovernmenteverymanofthem.Thatisthewillofparliamentandthenation.TheBritishEmpireandtheFrenchrepublic,linkedtogetherintheircauseandintheirneed,willdefendtothedeaththeirnativesoil,aidingeachotherlikegoodcomradestotheutmosttotheirstrength.Weshallgoontotheend,weshallfightinFrance,weshallfightontheseasandoceans,weshallfightwithgrowingconfidenceandgrowingstrengthintheair,weshalldefendourisland,whateverthecostmaybe,weshallfightonthebeaches,weshallfightonthelandinggrounds,weshallfightinthefieldsandinthestreets,weshallfightinthehills;weshallneversurrender,andif,whichIdonotforamomentbelieve,thisislandoralargepartofitweresubjugatedandstarving,thenourempirebeyondtheseas,armedandguardedbytheBritishfleet,wouldcarryonthestruggle,until,inGod'sgoodtime,thenewworld,withallitspowerandmight,stepsforthtotherescueandtheliberationoftheold.
