BreastFeedingAdvantageofBreastFeeding:Breast-feedingisthemostsuitableforhumaninfant.Itcontainsalltheelementsforgrowthanddevelopmentineasilydigestedforms.Itcontainsallthenecessaryvitaminsandofcoursenootherfoodisascompletefortheinfantasbreastmilk.Itprovidespsychologicalandemotionalsatisfactionforbothmotherandchild.Advantagestothemother:1.Theinfantsuckingatthebreastpromotesinvolutionoftheuterusafterparturition.2.Manymothersfindgreatsatisfactioninfeedingtheinfantatthebreast.3.Thefactthatbreast-feedingsavestimeandtroublesappealstosomewomen.4.Breastmilkislessofastrainonthefamilybudgetthanbuyingfreshorevenevaporatedmilk.5.Itfulfillsthefeminineroleandmotherlyattitudes.6.Lowerincidencerateofcancerbreastinwoman.Advantagestotheinfant:1.Humanmilkiswarm,ready,sterileandperfectlybalancedinprotein,carbohydrate,fatandvitaminanddoesnotcostanything.2.Itismoreeasilydigestedthancow’smilk.3.Breast-fedinfantshavegreaterimmunitytocertainchildhooddiseases(itprovidesimmunologicfactorstocertaindisease).4.Breastmilkisavailablealltimes.5.Infantsarelesslikelytohavegastro-intestinaldisorders,anemiaandvitamindeficiency.6.Infantsarelesslikelytoacquireinfectioninhomeswherecleanlinessisdifficulttoattain.7.Infantissecurethroughconstantcontactwithhismotherandthishasaneffectonthechild’spsychologyanddevelopment.Breastmilkbreast-feeding-Perfectnutrients-Helpsbonding&development-Easilydigested-Helpsdelayanewpregnancy-Efficientlyused-Protectsmother'shealth-protectsagainstinfection-CostslessthanartificialfeedingPsychologicalImpactofBreastFeeding:•Breast-feedinghaspsychologicaladvantagestothemotherandthebaby.Thephysicalcontactbetweenmotherandbabymaybeimportantbutthepsychologicalfactorismore.Breast-feedingestablishesaclosebondbetweenmotherandbaby;theytypicallyreportafeelingofwarmthandopenness.•Breast-feedingpositivelyinfluencethequalityofmother-childinteractionbecauseitestablishesamoredirectintimatebiologicalrelationship.Ifamotherandchildareallowedtobeinclosephysicalcontactimmediatelyafterbirthcomplexinteractionsbetweenmotherandinfanthelptolockthemtogether.•Loveandsecurityarevitalneedsofchildren.Theyrequirethecontinuousaffectiongivenbyparents.Themotheristhefirstonewhocaresforthechildthroughbreast-feeding.Iftrustistodevelopconsistencymustbeestablished.Asenseoftrustisvitaltothedevelopmentofahealthypersonality.Manyconsiderittobethefoundationofemotionalgrowth.Mothersaretaughttotalk,sing,andtouchtheirbabieswhileprovidingbreast-feeding.Feeding:-TechniqueofBreast1.Breastshouldbecleansedeverydaywhenthemothertakesashower,otherwisebreastiswashedwithplainwateranddriesthoroughly.2.Mother’sclothesshouldnotbetightoverthebreastandclean.3.Themothershouldwashhandthoroughlybeforenursingherinfant.4.Theinfantshouldbehungry,dryandwarm.5.Themothershouldbeincomfortablepositioneitherinsittingorlyingposition(supportfeetinsittingposition).6.Positioningofinfant:i.e.,howtheinfant’sbodyisputnearthemother’sbody:–Theinfantmustbeheldclosetohismother’sbody,tummyagainsttummyandtheinfantfacingthebreast,sothathedoesn’thavetoturntheheadtofeed.–Theinfant’snoseshouldbelevelwithnippleandhewilltilthisheadbackalittle.–Insomepositions,theinfant’sbottomissupportedwithmother’shand(sitting,verticalandhorizontalposition).Inotherposition,shecansupporttheheadgentlywithherhand.–Theclassicalfeedingpositionsasshowninfigure“5”are:a.Cradleposition.b.Crosscradleposition.c.Foot-ballhold.d.Horizontalposition.e.Backwardsposition.f.Positionfortwobabies.7.Themothercangentlysupportherbreast;shecancupherbreastwithherhandfromunderneathusingfourfingersunderneathandwellbehindtheareola.Herthumbshouldberestingonthetopofherbreast”C-hold”.8.Rubthenippleorafingergentlyagainsttheinfant’scheekorlipstostimulate“rootingreflex”.Sotheinfantfocusesonthebreast.D-Horizontalposition9.Touchtheinfant’slipwiththenippletoevokeoralsearchingreflexwheretheinfantopenshismouthwidelyandthruststhetongueforwardandholdthenippleandapartoftheareola(dependingonthesizeoftheareola,ifitissmallitwilldisappear,ifitislarge,alargepartwillbevisible).Thisiswhatiscalled“latchon”.Rememberthattheinfantwhoshouldcometothebreast,notthebreasttotheinfant.(Fig.3)“Latchon”Fig.(3)•Whentheinfantfeeds,hischinshouldtouchthemother’sbreast,themostimportantsignalforthemotheristhatfeedingdoesn’thurt,aspainisusuallyasignofpoorattachment.•Duringfeeding,noneedtopressthebreastawayfromtheinfant’snostrilswithfinger.Iftheinfantiswellpositionedandwellattached,hewillbeabletobreathethroughthesidesofthenostrils.Thecommonused“scissor”position(V-hold)ofthefingersmaypullthebreastoutofhismouth.Mothercancupherbreastwithherhandfromunderneath(C-hold)(Fig.4).Nopositioncanbelabeled“ideal”,theimportantthingisthatthemotherisrelaxedandcanholdherinfantclosetoherbreastcomfortablyforthetimeittakes.SupportingYourBreastcorrectbreastsupportIncorrectbreastsupportFig.4•10.Howoftenandforhowlong:Unrestrictedbreast-feeding,i.e.self-demandmethodisthekeytoestablishmilksupplyandwillpreventmanydifficulties.Givebreastwhenevertheinfantshowsthesignsofhungerduringthedayandthenight.Italsomeanslettingtheinfantfini
