SAETechnicalStandardsBoardRulesprovidethat:“ThisreportispublishedbySAEtoadvancethestateoftechnicalandengineeringsciences.Theuseofthisreportisentirelyvoluntary,anditsapplicabilityandsuitabilityforanyparticularuse,includinganypatentinfringementarisingtherefrom,isthesoleresponsibilityoftheuser.”SAEreviewseachtechnicalreportatleasteveryfiveyearsatwhichtimeitmaybereaffirmed,revised,orcancelled.SAEinvitesyourwrittencommentsandsuggestions.QUESTIONSREGARDINGTHISDOCUMENT:(412)772-8512FAX:(412)776-0243TOPLACEADOCUMENTORDER;(412)776-4970FAX:(412)776-0790SAEWEBADDRESS(R)BRAKELININGQUALITYTESTPROCEDURE1.Scope—ThepurposeofthisSAERecommendedPracticeistoestablishauniformlaboratoryprocedureforsecuringandreportingthefrictionandwearcharacteristicsofbrakelinings.Theperformancedataobtainedcanbeusedforin-plantqualitycontrolbybrakeliningmanufacturersandforthequalityassessmentofincomingshipmentsbythepurchasersofbrakelinings.2.References—Therearenoreferencedpublicationsspecifiedherein.3.Equipment—Atypical,commerciallyavailablemachineasusedinthepreparationofthistestprocedureandknownasaFrictionMaterialsTestMachineisshowninFigures1and2.TheFrictionMaterialsTestMachineshallbeequippedwithsuitablemeansfor:a.Measuringthedrumtemperatureb.Heatingthedrumc.Controllingthedrumheatingrated.Coolingthedrumfromthebacksideonlye.Controllingthedrumcoolingratef.Measuringfrictionforceg.MeasuringdrumrotationalspeedMeansshallbeprovidedformeasuringspecimenthicknessandmass.Thetemperaturemeasuringmeansshallincorporateaweldedthermocouple,coinsilversliprings,silver-graphitebrushes,andanindicatorand/orrecorderhavingahighinputimpedance.Thedrumheatingmeansshallbeadjustedasfollowsandremainsoduringthetest,withthedrumrotatingat417r/min,coolfrom149°C(300°F)to93°C(200°C)withcoolingairon.Thencoolto82°C(180°F)withcoolingairoff.Turnonheatersat82°C(180°F)andstarttiming.Heatfor10min.Drumtemperatureshallbe221°C±14°C(430°F±25°F)at10min.Thedrumcoolingmeansshallbeadjustedasfollowswiththedrumrotatingat417r/min,andafterhavingheatedthedrumwiththeheaterelementsto371°C(700°F),turnofftheheatersandturnoncoolingair.Coolto343°C(650°F)andstarttiming.Coolfor10min.Drumtemperatureshallbe93°C±14°C(200°F±25°F)at10min.Thetemperaturemeasuringsystemshallhave±2%full-scaleaccuracy.SAEJ661RevisedFEB97-2-FIGURE1—SCHEMATICDIAGRAMOFFRICTIONMATERIALSFORTESTMACHINESAEJ661RevisedFEB97-3-FIGURE2—FRICTIONMATERIALSTESTMACHINEDRUMThefrictionforcemeasuringsystemshallhave±2%full-scaleaccuracy.Thedrumspeedmeasuringsystemshallhave±2%full-scaleaccuracy.Thedrumshallbeusedonlybetweentheinsidediameterlimitsof277.4to279.9mm(10.920to11.020in)andhavethreethermocouplelocations,oneeachatdepthsof2.55(stampednumber1),3.05(stampednumber2)and3.55mm(stampednumber3)fromthenewdrumsurfacediameterof277.4mm(10.920in).ThethermocoupleshouldbemountedinthepositionindicatedinTable1:SAEJ661RevisedFEB97-4-4.TestConditions—ActualtestsforperformanceshallbestartedwhenpreparationshavebeencompletedinaccordancewithSection5.4.1ConductofTest—Alltestingshallproceedwithoutinterruption.4.2DrumSpeeds—Alldrumspeeds(r/min)arebasedonanominal279.4mm(11.0in)diameterdrumwithloadappliedtothespecimen.5.Procedure5.1PreparationofTestSpecimen—Thetestspecimenshallbetakenfromthecenterofthefrictionmaterialapproximatelyequidistantfromeachend.Thetestspecimenshallhavedimensionsof25.4mmx25.4mm(1.0inx1.0in),flatonthebottom,andtheradiusoftheworkingsurfaceshallconformtotheradiusofthetestdrum.Onpre-groundlinings,removeatleast0.3mm(0.01in),butnotmorethan0.5mm(0.02in)fromtheworkingsurfaceofthespecimen.Forun-groundlinings(directlyfrommolds),remove1.0/1.2mm(0.04/0.05in)tobecertainthattheresinimpregnatedsurfaceistotallyremoved.Specimenthickness(orspecimenplusshim)shouldbeapproximately6mm(0.24in)measuredinthecenterofspecimen.Excessofmaterialmustberemovedfromthesideoppositetheworkingsurfaceofthespecimen.Incaseswherenominalliningthicknessislessthan5mm(0.20in),removeaminimumamountofmaterialfromthesideoppositetheworkingsurfacetoproduceflatness.Theworkingsurfaceofthespecimenshallnotbehandledandshallbekeptfreefromforeignmaterial.5.2PreparationofTestDrumSurface5.2.1NEWORRESURFACEDDRUM—Aftergrindingthedrumsurfaceonthetestmachine,removeallgrindermarksbypolishingwithabrasivepaperorcloth.Finalpolishingshallbewith320grit.Removedustfromdrumwithcleandrycheesecloth,whitepapertoweling,orequivalent.Completethesurfacepreparationbyrunningareferencespecimencontinuouslyat440N(100lb),417r/minandnotover93°C(200°F)untilthefrictioncoefficienthasstabilized.5.2.2PRIORTOEACHTEST—Polishthedrumsurfacewithabrasivepaperorcloth.Finalpolishingshallbewith320grit.Removedustfromthedrumwithcleancheesecloth,whitepapertoweling,orequivalent.5.3ConditioningofTestSpecimen—Thespecimenisburnishedat312r/min,440N(100lb),andamaximumtemperatureo
