ReadingafterPrideandPrejudiceRecentlyIhavebeenreadinganovelcalledPrideandPrejudice,whichwaswrittenbyJaneAusten.AlthoughIhaven’tfinishedityet,Istillhavesomethingtowrite.Thewriter,JaneAusten,wasanEnglishwoman.ShewasborninSteventon,Hampshine,whereherfatherwasarector.Shewastheseconddaughterandtheseventhchildinafamilyofeight.Thefirst25yearsofherlifeAustenspentinHampshire.Austindidn’tgotoregularschools,butshereadmanyliteraryworksatherparents’guidance.Shestartedwritingabouttheageof20,andpublishedsixnovels.PrideandPrejudice(1813)andEmma(1816)arethebest-knownbooksofthem.VirginiaWoolfcalledher“themostperfectartistamongwomen”.Mostofhernovelswerealladaptedintomoviesandsuccessfulintheworld.Forlivinginasmallcountrytown,contactingthemediumandsmalllandlords,pastoraswellastheirquietandcomfortablelivingenvironment,therewerenosignificantsocialcontradictionsinherworks.Shedescribedatruthfulpictureofherworld,especiallythemarriageandlovebetweengentlemenandladiesbyhermeticulousfeminineobservation.Thestyleofherworksishumorousandrichincomicconflicts,somanyreaderslovethem.Thistypeofnovelsnotonlyatthattimeattractedbroadreaders,today;itstillgivesthereadersuniqueartenjoyment.ThenoveldescribesloveprocessofheroineElizabethandheroDarcy,hereldersisterJaneandMr.Bingley,youngersisterJaneandMr.Bingley,youngersisterLydiaandMr.Wickham,hergoodfriendCharlotteandMr.Collins.ThemarriagebetweenDarcyandElizabethrevealedthecharacteristicswhichconstitutedasuccessfulmarriage.Oneofthesecharacteristicswasthatthefeelingcouldn’tbebroughtonbyappearancesandmustgraduallydevelopbetweenthetwopeopleastheygottoknowoneanother.ThemarriagebetweenJaneBennetandBingleywasalsoanexampleofsuccessfulmarriage.Theyhadtheexcellentunderstanding,super-excellentdispositionofJaneandageneralsimilarityoffeelingandtastebetweenherandherhusband.UnlikeDarcyandElizabeth,therewasaflawintheirrelationship.Theflawwasthatbothcharactersweretoogullibleandtoogood-heartedtoeveractstronglyagainstexternalforcesthatmayattempttoseparatethem.Obviously,LydiaandWickham’smarriagewasanexampleofabadmarriage.Theirmarriagewasbasedonappearances,goodlooksandyouthfulvivacity.Oncethesequalitiescouldnolongerbeseenbyeachother,theoncestrongrelationshipwouldslowlyfadeaway.Throughtheirrelationship,JaneAustenshowedthathastymarriagebasedonsuperficialqualitiesquicklycooledandledtounhappiness.ThemarriagebetweenMr.CollinsandCharlettewasbasedoneconomicsratherthanonloveorappearance.ItwasacommonpracticeduringAusten’stimeforwomantomarryahusbandtosaveherselffromspinsterhoodortogainfinancialsecurity.However,JaneAustenviewedthisasatypeofprostitutionanddisapprovedit.Elizabethwasaclever,beautifulandstrong-mindedwoman,wholookeddownuponthehypocrisyinhigh-societycircles.Facingthemarriage,shewascourage,visionaryandgoodatthinking.Although,shehadsomewrongopinionsonDarcyinthebeginning,finallysheknewaboutDarcyjustlythroughthinking,hencegainedthetruelove.Darcywasahandsome,richgentleman,butproudanddidn’twanttomakecontactwithothers,leadingtodissatisfactionsfromneighbors.Evenworse,DarcyleftbadimpressionsonthepeoplearoundhimandElizabethalsohatedhim.ShehadprejudiceagainstDarcygradually.WhenDarcyproposedtoher,sherefusedhimdecisively.Afterthat,Darcybegantoreflectontheself-examinationandtreatedpeoplewithmorepopulist.Astimewentby,theycameacrossagain.Darcywasnotonlypolite,butwaspopularamongtheneighbors.Finally,regardlessofhisaunt’sstrongobjectionandconceptoffamily,DarcyproposedtoElizabethagain.Elizabethwillinglyconsented.ShebegantoappearherlivelysidetoDarcy.Thecharactershavetheirownpersonalities.Mrs.Bennetwasawomanwhowaseagertomarryoffherdaughters.Mr.Bingleywasafriendlyyoungman.Janewassimple,innocentandneverspokeevilofothers.Elizabethwasaclevergirlwhoalwayshadherownopinions.Marylikedreadingclassicbooks.Kittydidn’thaveherownopinionsbutlikedtofollowhersister.Lydiawasagirlwhofollowedexoticthings,handsomemanandwassomehowalittleprofligate.AsfarasIamconcerned,loveisthemostbeautifulandvaluablethingandthebasisofmarriage.Althoughmaterialisimportant,weshouldn’tgiveupseekingforthetruelove.BycontrastingElizabethwithLydia,weknowthetrueloveisessential.Then,Ithinkthebehavioristhesymbolofpeople.IfDarcywaspoliteandwarm-heartedinthebeginning,maybehewouldnothavebeenmisunderstoodbyElizabeth.Therefore,neverbearrogant.Itistruethatthefirstimpressionisimportant,butweshouldalsorecognizesomeoneinlongtimeandfromallaspects.Thatrequireswearestrong-minded,reasonedandsensible.Betoleranttoanyone,andyouwillbemorelikelygainhappiness.Lastbutnotleast,thisnovelhasaneffectontoday’sChinesesociety,whichisfullofbullionismandhedonism.Manyyoungershavethequestion,especiallygirls,“Roseandbread,whichismoreimportant”.OnceinafamousdatingshowcalledIfyouaretheone,agirlsaid“WouldrathersitintheBMWcarcrying,don’tsitonthebikelaughing”,whichmeansshewouldlivetogetherwitharichmanratherthanapoorman.Mostgirlsthinkthathouses,carsandpropertyaremoreimportantthanappearancesandcharacters.Idon’tagreewithit.Asnewcentury’sgirls,whoareexpectedtobeindependent,self-reliance,self-love,wecouldearnmoneythroughourowneffects
