theabilityofthecoatingtoretainitsintegrityandthusmaintainasatisfactoryappearance.Althoughthesefunctionsoverlap,theycanbeevaluatedseparatelyintermsof: aprotectionrating(Rp)relatingtothecorrosionofthebasemetal; anappearancerating(RA)relatingtothedeteriorationofthecoating.Theprotectionrating(Rp)assignsanumberrepresentingtheabilityofthecoatingtoprotectthebasemetalfromcorrosion.Theappearancerating(RA)assignsasequenceoflettersandnumberstotheoverallappearanceofthespecimenwhichincludesalldeteriorationcausedbythecorrosiontestorenvironment.NOTE1Imperfectionsonapanelorarticlebeforeexposuretestingshouldbenotedandgivendueconsiderationwhenevaluatingtheresultsoftheexamination.Deliberateimperfectionsmayalsobeintroducedaspartofatestprogramme.Thecoatingsystemhastobeknownandreportedifthisratingsystemisapplied.Itisespeciallyimportanttoknow,ifpossible,whetherthecoatingisanodicorcathodictothebasemetal.NOTE2Determinationoftheanodicandcathodiccorrosivemechanismscanbeextremelydifficultinsomecases(chromatedzinconsteelor
