20110101Hello,everybody.Asweclosethebooksononeyearandbeginanother,IwantedtotakeamomenttodaytowishyouaveryHappyNewYearandtalkalittlebitabouttheyearthatliesahead.Atthestartof2011,we’restilljustemergingfromaonce-in-a-lifetimerecessionthat’stakenaterribletollonmillionsoffamilies.Weallhavefriendsandneighborstryingtogettheirlivesbackontrack.Weare,however,ridingafewmonthsofeconomicnewsthatsuggestsourrecoveryisgainingtraction.Andourmostimportanttasknowistokeepthatrecoverygoing.AsPresident,that’smycommitmenttoyou:todoeverythingIcantomakesureoureconomyisgrowing,creatingjobs,andstrengtheningourmiddleclass.That’smyresolutionforthecomingyear.Still,evenasweworktoboostoureconomyintheshort-term,it’stimetomakesomeseriousdecisionsabouthowtokeepoureconomystrong,growing,andcompetitiveinthelongrun.Wehavetolookahead–notjusttothisyear,buttothenext10years,andthenext20years.Wherewillnewinnovationscomefrom?Howwillweattractthecompaniesoftomorrowtosetupshopandcreatejobsinourcommunities?Whatwillittaketogetthosejobs?Whatwillittaketoout-competeothercountriesaroundtheworld?WhatwillittaketoseetheAmericanDreamcometrueforourchildrenandgrandchildren?Ourparentsandgrandparentsaskedthemselvesthosequestions.Andbecausetheyhadthecouragetoanswerthem,we’vehadthegoodfortunetogrowupinthegreatestnationonEarth.Nowit’sourturntothinkaboutthefuture.Inafewdays,anewCongresswillform,withonehousecontrolledbyDemocrats,andonehousecontrolledbyRepublicans–whonowhaveasharedresponsibilitytomovethiscountryforward.Andhere’swhatIwantyoutoknow:I’mwillingtoworkwithanyoneofeitherpartywho’sgotagoodideaandthecommitmenttoseeitthrough.Andweshouldallexpectyoutoholdusaccountableforourprogressorourfailuretodeliver.AsI’vesaidsinceIfirstranforthisoffice,solvingourchallengeswon’tbequickoreasy.Wehavecomethroughadifficultdecade;oneofnewthreatsandnewtrialswedidn’texpectwhenitbegan.Butanewyearandanewdecadestretchoutbeforeus.AndifwejustrememberwhatAmericaiscapableof,andliveuptothatlegacy,thenI’mconfidentthatwearepoisedforaperiodofprogress–oneinwhichoureconomyisgrowing,ourstandingintheworldisrising,andwedowhatittakestomakesureAmericaremainsinthe21stcenturywhatitwasinthe20th:thegreatestcountryintheworld.Thanksforlistening.AndHappyNewYear.20110108Lastmonth,oureconomyaddedmorethan100,000privatesectorjobsandtheunemploymentratefellsharply.Thisfollowsencouragingeconomicnewsfromincreasedautosalestocontinuedexpansionofourmanufacturingsector.Now,weknowthatthesenumberscanbouncearoundfrommonthtomonth.Butthetrendisclear.Wesaw12straightmonthsofprivatesectorjobgrowth–thefirsttimethat’sbeentruesince2006.Theeconomyadded1.3millionjobslastyear.Andeachquarterwasstrongerthanthelast,whichmeansthepaceofhiringispickingup.Nowwe’reseeingmoreoptimisticeconomicforecastsfortheyearahead,inpartduetothepackageoftaxcutsIsignedlastmonth.Ifoughtforthatpackagebecause,whilewearerecovering,weplainlystillhavealotofworktodo.Therecessionrockedthefoundationsofoureconomy,andleftalotofdestructionanddoubtinitswake.So,ourfundamentalmissionmustbetoacceleratehiringandgrowth,whilewedothethingsweknowarenecessarytoinsureAmerica’sleadershipinanincreasinglycompetitiveworldandbuildaneconomythatwillprovideopportunitytoanyAmericanwillingtoworkforit.I’mabsolutelyconfidentwewillgetthere.Iamconfident,firstandforemost,becauseofyou;becauseoftheingenuityofourentrepreneursandbusinessowners;thetenacityofourworkers;andthedeterminationoftheAmericanpeople.Thisiswhathasmadeoureconomytheenvyoftheworld.Butwehavetodoeverythingwecantohelpourbusinessesandworkerswininthisneweconomy.Yesterday,IvisitedtheThompsonCreekWindowCompany,asmallbusinessinMaryland.Overthepastyear,salestherehavegrownby55%thanks,inpart,toanenergytaxcreditwecreated.Andthisyear,they’realsoplanningtotakeadvantageofanewtaxincentiveforbusinesses.Foroneyear,anybusiness,largeorsmall,canwriteoffthefullcostofmostoftheircapitalinvestments.ThiswillmakeitmoreaffordableforbusinesseslikeThompsonCreektoexpandandhire.So,ifyou’reabusinessowner,I’dencourageyoutotakeadvantageofthistemporaryprovision.Itwillsaveyoumoneytodayandhelpyougrowyourbusinesstomorrow.ThisincentiveispartoftheeconomicpackageIsignedintolawlastmonth–apackagethatalsoincludesapayrolltaxcutthatwillmean$1,000morethisyearforatypicalfamily.Infact,155millionworkerswillseelargerpaychecksthismonthasaresultofthistaxcut.Twelvemillionfamilieswillbenefitfroma$1,000childtaxcreditandanexpandedEarnedIncomeTaxCredit.Eightmillionstudentsandfamilieswillcontinuetobenefitfroma$2,500tuitiontaxcredittomakecollegemoreaffordable.AndmillionsofentrepreneursinbigcitiesandsmalltownsacrossthecountrywillbenefitnotonlyfromthebusinessexpensingplanImentioned,butfromadditionaltaxcutsthatwillspurresearchanddevelopment.Independentexpertshaveconcludedthat,takentogether,thispackageoftaxcutswillsignificantlyacceleratethepaceofoureconomicrecovery,spurringadditionaljobsandgrowth.Andthatisourmission.Thatshouldbethefocus,dayinanddayout,ofourworkinWashingtoninthecomingmonths,aswewrestlewithachallengingbudgetandlong-termdeficits.AndI’mdeterminedtoworkwitheveryone,RepublicansandDemocra
