Chapter4:BeyondtheSimpleSentence:SubordinationSofaryouhavestudiedhowtoputtwosentencestogetherbycoordinatingthem,thatiskeepingthemequal.ChapterFourexploressubordinationwhichisputtingsentencestogetherbyturningoneofthemintoadependentclause.Adependentclauseisstillaclause;ithasasubjectandaverb,butdoesNOTmakesensebyitself.Adependentclausedependsonanotherindependentclauseinordertomakesense.Dependentclausesarecreatedbyusingsubordinatingconjunctionstojointhetwosentences.Thesubordinatingconjunctioncanbeaddedateitherthebeginningofthefirstsentenceorbetweenthetwosentencesyouarejoining.Thissentencepatternofoneindependentclauseandoneormoredependentclausesiscalledacomplexsentence.Punctuatingcomplexsentencesisfairlysimple.Ifthedependentclausebeginsthesentencethenacommaisusedattheendofthedependentclause.Iftheindependentclausebeginsthesentence,thennocommaisnecessary.Usingsubordinationandcoordinationhelpsyourwritingbygivingitvarietyandinterestinthesentencestructures.[1]
