IS940:2003=mw–fi~l~IndianStandardPORTABLEFIREEXTINGUISHER,WATERTYPE(GASCARTRIDGE)-SPECIFICATION(FourhRevision)ICS33.220.100BIS2003BUREAUOFINDIANSTANDARDSMANAKBHAVAN,9BAHADURSHAHZAFARMARGNEWDELHI110002May2003PriceGroup4FireFightingSectionalCommittee,CED22FOREWORDThisIndianStandard(FourthRevision)wasadoptedbytheBureauofIndianStandards,afterthedraftfinalizedbytheFireFightingSectionalCommitteehadbeenapprovedbytheCivilEngineeringDivisionCouncil.Portablefireextinguisher,watertype(gascartridge)isoneofthetypesofthetireextinguishersusedasfirst-aidfirefightingappliance.ThistypeofextinguisherissuitableforfightingfiresinClassAfires,thatis,inwood,textiles,paper,etc.ThedetailsinregardtomaintenanceofthisapplianceinefticientconditionaregiveninIS2190‘Codeofpracticeforselection,installationandmaintenanceofportablefirst-aidfireextinguishers(thirdrevision)’.Thisstandardwasfirstpublishedin1961andsubsequentlyrevisedin1972,1976and1989.Inthisrevision,theprincipalmodificationsmadeareinrespectofprovidingcaphavingsqueezegriptypeCOZgascartridgepuncturemechanismandalsoon-offcontroldischarge.Squeezegriptypecaphasfollowingadvantagesovertheconventionalcap:a)Itissafeinoperationastheoperationneednothittheknobwithforcebyhand.b)Thedischargecanbehaltedandrestartedatthewilloftheoperator.c)Ithasbuiltinoperationleverandcarryinghandle.Othermodificationsmadeareasfollows:a)Stainlesssteelbodyisincludedtoprovideresistancefromcorrosionandgoodaestheticappearance.b)Internalplasticliningoftheextinguishertoavoidcorrosioninusage.c)Typetestforleadedtinalloycoatingandstainlesssteelbodieshavebeenincorporated.d)Epoxypowde-coatingforexternalsurfaceisincludedtoimprovethescratchhardness,lifeandaesthetics.e)Provisionofthicknessofbodyinaccordancewithburstingformulae.Inadditiontoabovevariousprovisionshavebeenupdatedwhicharebasedonexperiencegainedintheuseofthisapplianceinthepast.AschemeforIabellingenvironmentfriendlyproductsknownasECO-MarkhasbeenintroducedattheinstanceoftheMinistryofEnvironmentandForests(MEF),GovernmentofIndia.TheECO-MarkwouldbeadministeredbytheBureauofIndianStandards(BIS)undertheBLSACI,1986aspertheResolutionNo.71dated21February1991andNo.425dated28October1992publishedintheGazetteoftheGovernmentofIndia.ForaproducttobeeligibleformarkingwithECOlogo,itshallalsocarrythe1S1MarkofBISbesidesmeetinqadditionaloptionalenvironmentfriendlyrequirements.Forthispurpose,theStandardMarkofBISwouldbeasinglemarkbeingacombinationofthe1S1MarkandtheECOlogo.Requirementstobesatisfiedforaproducttoquali~fortheBISStandardMarkforECOfriendlinessareoptional;manufacturingunitsarefreetooptfortheISMarkalonealso.ThisclauseisbasedontheGazetteNotificationNo.160dated1April1999forfireextinguishersasenvironmentfriendlyproductspublishedintheGazetteoftheGovernmentofIndia.Forthepurposeofdecidingwhetheraparticularrequirementofthisstandardiscompliedwith,thefinalvalue,observedorcalculated,expressingtheresultofatestoranalysis,shallberoundedoffinaccordancewithIS2:1960‘Rulesforroundingoffnumericalvalues(revised’.Thenumberofsignificantplacesretainedintheroundedoffvalueshouldbethesameasthatofthespecifiedvalueinthisstandard.IS940:2003IndianStandardPORTABLEFIREEXTINGUISHER,WATERTYPE(GASCARTRIDGE)-SPECIFICATION(FourthRevision)1SCOPEThisstandardlaysdowntherequirementsregardingprinciple,capacity,material,shape,design,construction,anti-corrosivetreatmentandtestsofportablewatertypefireextinguisher.2REFERENCESThestandardsgiveninAnnexAcontainprovisionswhichthroughreferenceinthistext,constituteprovisionsofthisstandard.Atthetimeofpublication,theeditionsindicatedwerevalid.Allstandardsaresubjecttorevision,andpartiestoagreementsbasedonthisstandardareencouragedtoinvestigatethepossibilityofapplyingthemostrecenteditionsofthestandardsgiveninAnnexD.3PRINCIPLEANDDESIGN3.1Theextinguishershallbeuprighttype,thusoperatedbyholdingtheextinguisheruprightandpiercingthegascartridgebyapplyingpressureonplungerorbypressingthesqueezegriptherebydischargingthecontents.3.2Duringtheoperation,thejet,wherepossible,shouldbeabletostriketheburningsurfaceandengulffire.4CAPACITYTheliquidcapacityoftheextinguisherwhenfilledtothespecifiedlevelindicatedinexteriorofthebodyshallbe9.0+0.5litre.5MATERIALThematerialsfortheconstructionofvariouspartsofthefireextinguishershallbeasgiveninTable1.6SHAPETheshapeofthebodyshallbecylindricalwithanoutsidediameterof175+5mm.7CONSTRUCTION7.1General7.1.1Thecylindershallbeofweldedconstructionhavingcoldorhotdrawncylindricalportionwithhemi-sphericalellipsoidalortorisphericalendsweldedtoitortwohalves(upperhalfshorter)coldorhotdrawnhavingdomeandbottomdishofhemi-sphericalorellipsoidalortorisphericalandcircumferentiallyweldedtogether.Acylindricalskirthavingminimum25mmheightshallbeweldedtothebottomdish.TheweldingshallbedonebyanelectricarcweldingprocessandshallconformtoIS2825.7.1.2Wherecarryinghandleand/orsupportingfittingsarefittedtothebody,theseshallbeeitherweldedorbrazed.Thecarryinghandleshallbemadeofmildsteelorstainlesssteelrodnotlessthan6mmindiameterorfabricatedoutofmildsteelorstainlesssteelsheetsofsamethicknessasthebodyan
