法学夏令营的个人陈述IfirstrealisedIwishedtostudylawwhilstreadinganewspaper,whenitsuddenlyoccurredtomethateveryarticlewassomehowrelatedtothelaw.Irememberthinkinghowamazingitwasthatsuchadiverserangeofissuescouldbelinkedbacktoasingleword.Thistrulyuniquequalityofinfluencingallaspectsoflife(althoughIamsurethereareplentyofeconomistswhowouldquestionitsuniqueness)haspromptedmetoreadlawasanundergraduate.Itintriguesmebecauseitiscontinuallyevolvingovertime,fasterratethananythingIhavemetinmycurrentstudies,inordertoremainatruereflectionofanever-changingsocietyIbuiltuponmyinitialinterestbyavidlyreading“TheLawMachine”byMarcelBerlinsandClareDyer;itprovidedmewithafirmgroundingintheessentialprinciplesoftheBritishlegalsystemandhighlighteditsapparentweaknesses.TofurtherconsolidatemyknowledgeIread“LearningtheLaw”byGlanvilleWilliamsandhavekeptmyselfinformedofcurrentlegaleventsprintedinthe“TheTimes”,IhavealsoattendedalawseminaratKing’sCollege,UniversityofLondonIthoughtitawisemovetopursueaninsightintohowthelawworksinreality.IsuccessfullyappliedtobecomeaBerkshireWitnessServiceVolunteerandthusembarkedonanin-depthtrainingcourseThisincorporatedanintroductiontothefunctionsoftheCrownProsecutionServiceanddiscussionsoftheskillsrequiredtoworkwithpeoplefrommanysocialbackgrounds.Myresponsibilitiesmainlyinvolveprovidingemotionalsupportforwitnessesthroughouttheirtrials,thishashelpedmedevelopanappreciationofwhatthelawrepresentstosomeonefromoutsidethecourtsystemandhowdeeplyitcanimpactontheirlivesInordertogainadifferentperspectiveofthelaw,Iobtainedaworkexperienceplacementwithalocalsolicitor’sfirm.Myworkevolvedfrombasicofficeduties,suchasfiling,faxingandansweringtelephonecalls,intoaccompanyingsolicitorstocourtandliasingwithbarristersonbehalfofthefirm.Theopportunitytoworkalongsidepeoplewhohavededicatedtheirlivestothelawhasstrengthenedmyresolvetostudylawandgivenmetheconfidencetomakeawell-informeddecisionThroughoutmyschoollife,Ihavemaintainedanindependent,self-motivatedapproachtomystudies.HavingstudiedabroadrangeofALevelsubjects,IfeelIhaveacquiredawidevarietyofskills:fromMathematicsandPhysicsIhavelearnttheartofquestioningtheworldaroundusanddevelopingakeensenseofintellectualcuriosity;fromEnglishLiteratureandGeneralStudiesIhaveunderstoodtheimportanceofexpressingmyselfclearlyandconciselythroughwords;whilstfromICTIhavedevelopedasoundunderstandingofanareawhichisplayinganincreasinglyimportantroleinsocietyMyroleasDeputyHeadBoyhashelpedmegainasenseofresponsibilityandmaturity;taskssuchasorganisinglargenumbersofpeople,arrangingimportantschooleventsandmakingspeechestolargeaudienceshavehelpedmedevelopstrongpersonalandcommunicationskills.Thesehavebeenfurtherstrengthenedthroughmydutiesasasixthformmentorforthelowerschoolpupils,whereIprovidesupportandadviceforyoungerpupilswhoarestrugglingtocopewiththepressuresofschoollife.Ihavealsoheldpositionsonthestudentcouncil,presentingmyviewsandthoseofmypeerstotheseniorschoolstaff.Aboveallelse,IhavelearnttherewardsofmakingapositivecontributiontowardsschoollifeinmorethananacademicsenseandthinkIcantakethisunderstandingwithmetouniversityAsidefromschoolworkIhaveastrongpassionforrugby,representingandcaptainingmyschoolanddistrictatalllevelsaswellasparticipatinginasportstourtoSouthAfrica.Myotherinterestsincludefootball,cricketandIamakeenchessplayer,competingduringthetourtoSouthAfricaIbelieveIcancontributeagenuinepassionandenthusiasmforreadinglaw;Iamhopingtostudyataninstitutionwhichpresentslawasanintellectualdisciplineinitsownright,onewhichwillallowmetodeveloptheskillsofanalysis,reasoninganddiscussionrequiredtobesuccessfulbeyondundergraduatelevel.
