CaseStudyCTS056WorkingwithContinentalClothingProductcarbonfootprintinginpracticeTheCarbonTrustContinentalClothingwasthefirstbusiness-to-business(B2B)companytoparticipateintheCarbonTrust’sproductcarbonfootprintingandlabellinginitiative.TheprojectgavenewinsightsabouthowcarbonfootprintassessmentandcommunicationcanuniquelybenefitB2Bcompanies;howtheanalysiscanbedonecost-effectivelybyasmallerbusiness;andhowatextilecompanycanreducecarbonemissionsacrossitssupplychain.Itisalsoanearlyexampleofacompanyrollingouttheinitialpilottootherproductlinesintheirportfolioandeventopartnersupanddownthesupplychain.01WorkingwithContinentalClothingContinentalisdifferentiatedbyitsdirectdistributionmodelandfastbespokeservice,combinedwithanethically-drivenmission:“Toinspireandimplementsolutionstotheenvironmentalcrisis”.IthasfoursustainableapparellinesincludingitsleadingbrandEarthPositive®launchedin2007as:“Appareltocombatclimatechange”.Continental’ssupplychainsvarybyproductline.Someproductsaremanufacturedusingavertically-integratedsupplychaininwhichcertifiedorganiccottonfarming,spinning,dyingandclothingproductionalltakeplaceinwholly-ownedsites;othersareproducedusingamoretraditional,disaggregatedsupplychain.Thepilotproject:motivationContinentalClothinghasastrongcommitmenttosustainableproduction,andthefightagainstclimatechangeiscentraltoitsstrategy.Ithadalreadyinitiatedseveralmeasurestoreducecarbonemissionsaspartofthisbroadersustainabilityagenda.ThepurposeofparticipatingintheinitialCarbonTrustpilotandusingtheCarbonReductionLabelwastocertifyContinental’sin-houseassessmentsofproduct-levelcarbonemissionsandtoprovidecustomerswithindependent,credibleverificationtoproveit.TheEarthPositive®lineofshirtswasanaturalchoiceforContinental’sproductcarbonfootprintingpilotsinceitalreadyminimisesenvironmentalimpactinallproductionstages:•Organicfarming–allshirtsare100%certifiedorganiccotton.•Naturalirrigation–cottonfarmsinIndiaarelocatedinareaswhereenoughwateroccursnaturallythroughthemonsoonrainstosupply95%ofwater.•Renewableenergy–productionfacilityinIndiaispoweredbyanearbywindfarm,generatingverifiablerenewablepower.•Waste:–Cottonwastegenerated(theproductionofaT-shirtrequiresfivetimesitsendweightinrawcotton)iseitherreturnedtothefieldasanorganicfertiliserorusedforothertextileandupholsteryproductsmanufacturedinthelocalarea.–Dyesaremadeinacontrolledenvironmentwherewastewateristhoroughlytreated.•Packaging–allshirtsarepackagedusingbiodegradableor100%recycledmaterials.•Transport–Continentalhasa‘noairfreight’policy–allgoodsareshippedbysea.GiventheconsiderableeffortputintomakeEarthPositive®sustainable,Continentalwantedtoassesstheimpactthesemeasureshavehadonitsproductcarbonemissions.Establishedin1994,ContinentalClothingisaB2Bwholesalerofblankprintablet-shirts,poloshirtsandsweatshirtsforcorporate,leisureandpromotionalwear,withcustomersprimarilyinthemusicandadvertisingindustries.ContinentalClothingemploys45peopleandoperatesintheUK,USandGermany.CompanybackgroundCONTINENTAL®02TheCarbonTrustProductcarbonfootprintassessmentprocessContinentalsucceededincalculatingitsinitialproductfootprintsinrecordtime,atminimalcost,demonstratingtheopportunitySMEshavetoexecutequickly.Thecompanycalculatedthecarbonfootprintofitsblackandwhiteapparel,andthenaskedtheCarbonTrusttocertifyandprovidetheLabel.Thepilotprogressedrapidly,beginninginNovemberandfinishinginDecember2007.ByJanuary2008,thecompanywasabletoreleaseabrochureshowingtheEarthPositive®clothingrangethatincludedtheCarbonTrustCarbonReductionLabel.ThistightdeadlineencouragedContinentaltomovefastandthinkcreativelyabouthowtoconductthefootprintcalculation.IthiredaPhDgraduatechemistwhotravelledtoIndiawheretheEarthPositive®shirtsareproduced.Verticalintegrationandlocally-sourcedsupplyalsocontributedtothespeedofthepilot:ContinentalownsitsentireprocessingfacilityintheTamilNaduregionofIndia,andsources100%organiccottonfromasinglesetoflocalproducers.Thismadethedatacollectionprocessveryquick.Atwo-stageinterviewprocess–wherethefirstdayinvolvedvisitingasiteandlearningabouttheprocessandactivities,andtheseconddayfocusedondatacollection–provedtobeveryeffective.Armedwithadatacollectiontemplateandthesupportofthecompanytofocusexclusivelyoncarbonfootprinting,thecontractorwasabletocollectthedataandcalculatethefootprintinonlyeightweeksandataverylowtotalcost.SupplychainanalysisThecarbonfootprintcalculationforEarthPositive®shirtsreflectsallstagesoftheshirtlifecyclefromgrowingorganiccottonthroughtothearrivaloftheproductsintheUK.AsspecifiedinthePAS20501,B2BcompanieslikeContinentalClothingcanexcludethedistribution,retail,useanddisposalphasesoftheirproducts’lifecyclessincethesephasescanbehardtopredictastheirproductsmaybeusedbydifferentcustomersinverydifferentways.ThesupplychainoftheEarthPositive®garmentsisillustratedintheChart1.1BSIPubliclyAvailableSpecification(PAS)2050isbasedontheproductcarbonfootprintingmethodoriginallydevelopedbytheCarbonTrustandtrialledwithWalkers,Bootsandinnocent.TheCarbonTrustlaterco-sponsored,alongwiththeUKDepartmentforEnvironment,FoodandRu
