Chapter2:TanBeltMarineCorpsMartialArtsProgram2-71ForOfficialUseOnlyStanceThebasicwarriorstanceservesasthefoundationforinitiatingknifetechniquesandisexecutedasfollows:�Thelefthandservesasaverticalshieldprotectingtheribsortheheadandneck.�Therightelbowisbentwiththebladepointingforwardtowardtheaggressor’shead.Thispositionservesasanindexpoint,fromwhichalltechniquesareinitiated.�Theweaponshouldbeheldatalevelbetweenthetopofthebeltandthechest.�Theweaponshouldbekeptinclosetothebodytofacilitateweaponretention.VerticalSlashVerticalslashingtechniquesareusedtoclosewiththeaggressorandcanalsobeadistractiontotheaggressor.Whenexecutingaverticalslash,theprimarytargetareasofthebodyarethelimbsoranyportionofthebodythatispresented.Technique~Standfacingyouraggressor.~Thrustyourrighthandoutandbringtheweaponstraightdownontheaggressor.~Continuedraggingtheknifedownthroughtheaggressor’sbody.Maintaincontactontheaggressor’sbodywiththebladeoftheknife.Theslashingmotionfollowsaverticallinestraightdownthroughtheprimarytarget.~Returntothemodifiedbasicwarriorstance.Seefigure2-54.Figure2-54.VerticalSlash.2-72MCRP3-02BChapter2:TanBeltForOfficialUseOnlyVerticalThrustThrustingtechniquesaremoreeffectivethanslashingtechniquesbecauseofthedamagetheycancause.However,slashingtechniquesareusedtoclosewiththeaggressorinordertogetinprox-imitywhereathrustingtechniquecanbeused.Thethrustingmotionfollowsaverticallinestraightupthroughtheprimarytarget.Whenexecutingaverticalthrust,theprimarytargetareasofthebodyarelowintotheabdomenregionorhighintotheneck.Technique~Standfacingyouraggressorinthemodifiedbasicwarriorstance.~Thrustyourrighthandtowardtheprimarytarget,insertingtheknifebladestraightintotheaggressor.~Pulltheknifeoutoftheaggressor.~Returntothemodifiedbasicwarriorstance.Seefigure2-55.Figure2-55.VerticalSlash.ForOfficialUseOnlyCHAPTER3GrayBeltGrayBeltisthesecondbeltrankingwithinMCMAP.WithintwoyearsofqualifyingasaTanBelt,allMarinesareexpectedtoadvancetoGrayBelt.GrayBeltincludesthecomple-tionofbasicfundamentalsandintroductiontointermediatefundamentalsofeachdisciplineandistheminimumrequirementtoattendtheMartialArtsInstructorCourse.ThepurposeandprinciplesremainthesameasoutlinedinTanBelt.GrayBeltRequirements.PrerequisitesRecommendationofreportingseniorCompleteTanBeltsustainmentandintegrationtrainingCompleteMCI[MarineCorpsInstitute]0337,LeadingMarinesTrainingHoursMinimumof20hoursofinstruction,excludingremedialpracticetimeandtestingSustainmentHoursMinimumof5hoursofsustainment,excludingintegrationtrainingtimeandpracticetimefortesting3-2MCRP3-02BChapter3:GrayBeltForOfficialUseOnlySectionIBayonetThroughpropertraining,Marinesdevelopthecourageandconfidencerequiredtoeffectivelyuseabayonetforprotectionandtodestroytheaggressor.Whileclosingonanaggressor,adisruptorathrustcanbeusedwithabayonet.RefertoappendixAforcorrespondingsafeties1,2,8,9,and14.ExecutionDisruptionisthetechniqueusedtocreateanopeningfortheMarinewhenclosingwiththeaggressor.Tocreatethatopening,theMarinewillexecuteatechniquetobringtheaggressor’sweaponoffline.Entryisthemovementmadetogetinsidetheaggressor’sdefenseinordertoexecutefollow-ontech-niques.Amovementcanbeastepforwardorasmallsteptoanobliquetogetwithinstrikingdis-tanceoftheaggressor.Relyonhips/torsoforgeneratingpower.MovementMovementprovidesastableattackplatform,allowingtheMarinetoemployhisbayonettech-niqueson,outmaneuver,andoverwhelmhisaggressor.Approachingisusedwhenyouhavelocatedanaggressorandyouarewithin20to25yardsfromtheaggressor.Assumethemodifiedbasicwarriorstance(seefig.3-1).Bendyourbacksothatyouarehunchedovertheweaponandyourchinistuckedtoprotectyourneck,minimizingyourowntargetarea.Bendyourkneestohavealowercenterofgravityanddecreaseyourprofile.Movingatafastpace,walkusingyourlegstoabsorbtheimpactofyoursteps,andensurethatyourupperbodyisnotbouncingaroundasyoumove.Thebayonetmuststaylockedontheaggressor.Handplacementiscrucialforabayonettrainerasshowninfigure3-2.Figure3-1.ModifiedBasicWarriorStance.Figure3-2.HandPlacement.Chapter3:GrayBeltMarineCorpsMartialArtsProgram3-3ForOfficialUseOnlyClosingAsyoureachthecriticaldistanceof5to10feet,youwilluseaburstofspeedtoclosethefinaldistancebetweenyouandtheaggressorusingyourlegstoabsorbtheimpactofyoursteps.Yourstridelengthwillnotchangefromwhenyouwereapproachingtheaggressor.Toincreaseyourspeed,youwillvarytheturnoverrateofyoursteps(seefig.3-3),whichmaycausetheaggressortohesitateduringtheengagementandgiveyouthepsychologicalandtacticaladvantageoverhim(DONOTRUN).BayonetTechniquesDisruptandThrustWhileClosingDisruptAdisruptisatechniquethatinterceptsandredirectstheaggressor’sattack.Thisredirectionopensapathforyourbladetoenteryouraggressor.Thedisruptisaparrywhileclosingandthrusting.Ifyoutrytoparryandthenthrustwhileclosingwithyouraggressor,youwillmostlikelybecomeentangledwiththeaggressor.Todisrupttheaggressor’sattackandclearhisweapon,yourattackmustcomeataslightangletohisweapon.Theresultingcollisionwillredirecttheaggressor’sweaponandgiveyourbladeaclearpathtoyourprimarytarget.ThrustWhileClosingThestraightthrustisperformedtodisable
