ErnestHemingway(1899-1961)LifeHeoncetookpartinworldwarⅠ,SpanishcivilwarandworldwarⅡandtheseexperiencecreatedthemainsourceofinspirationthefuture.ErnestHemingwaywasbornon21stJuly1899inOakpark,Chicago.Father:Asuccessfulphysician,lovefishingandhunting.Mother:MusicteacherbiographyErnestHemingway(July21,1899-July2,1961)wasanAmericanwriterandjournalist.Hewaspartofthe1920sexpatriate(移居国外)communityinParis,andoneoftheveterans(退伍军人)oftheWorldWarⅠ,laterknownas“theLostGeneration”.HereceivesthePulitzerprizein1953forTheOldManandtheSea,andtheNobelPrizeinliteraturein1954.DefinitionofLostgenerationAtermfirstusedbyGertrudeSteintodescribethepost-WorldWarIgenerationofAmericanwriters:theseexpatriateshauntedbyasenseofbetrayalandemptinessbroughtaboutbythedestructivenessofthewar.ThetermiscommonlyappliedtoHartCrane,ErnestHemingway,F.ScottFitzgerald,andothers.Moregenerally,thistermisusedforthegenerationofyoungpeoplecomingofageintheUnitedStatesduringandshortlyafterWorldWarIwhowerelostindisillusionmentandexistentialvoids(空虚)andindulgedinhedonism(享乐主义)inordertomaketheirlifelessunbearable.DetailedintroductiontoLostGenerationWhenWorldWarIbrokeout,manyyoungmenvolunteeredtotakepartin“thewartoendwars”onlytofindthatmodernwarfarewasnotasgloriousorheroicastheythoughtittobe.Disillusionedanddisgustedbythefrivolous(轻佻的),greedy,andheedless(不留心的)wayoflifeinAmerica,theybegantowritefromtheirownexperiencesinthewar.Theterm“LostGeneration”camefromGertrudeStein,afriendofHemingway,whohadasaloninherhouseforEnglishandAmericanexpatriatesinParis.ThephrasewasaremarkshemadetoamechanicinHemingway’spresencethat“Youareallalostgeneration.”Mainarticle:《春潮》(TheTorrentsofSpring)《太阳照常升起》(TheSunAlsoRises)《永别了,武器》(AFarewelltoArms)《有钱人与没钱人》(ToHaveandHaveNot)《丧钟为谁而鸣》(ForWhomtheBellTolls)《过河入林》(AcrosstheRiverandIntotheTrees)《老人与海》(TheOldManandtheSea《海流中的岛屿》(IslandsintheStream)《伊甸园》(TheGardenofEden)《曙光示真》(TrueAtFirstLight)《乞力马扎罗山下》(UnderKilimanjaro)TheOldManandtheSea’sintroductionTheOldManandtheSeaisanovelwrittenbytheAmericanauthorErnestHemingwayin1951inCuba,andpublishedin1952.ItwasthelastmajorworkoffictiontobeproducedbyHemingwayandpublishedinhislifetime.Oneofhismostfamousworks,itcentersuponSantiago,anagingfishermanwhostruggleswithagiantmarlinfaroutintheGulfStream.TheOldManandtheSeawasawardedthePulitzerPrizeforFictionin1953andwascitedbytheNobelCommitteeascontributingtotheawardingoftheNobelPrizeinLiteraturetoHemingwayin1954.For84daystheoldCubanfishermanSantiagodoesnotcatchafishbuthedoesnotfeeldiscouraged.Hegoesfarintotheseaandhooksagiantmarlin.Hemanagestokillthefishandtieittohisboat,onlytofindthatonthewayhomehehastofightadesperatestrugglewithsomedangerousgiantsharks,whicheatupthemarlin,leavingonlyaskeleton.Theoldmanbringsithomeanddreams,almostdeadwithexhaustion.TheOldManandtheSeaWritingstyleIcebergtheoryofwriting:“Ifawriterofproseknowsenoughaboutwhatheiswritingabouthemayomitthingsthatwillhaveafeelingofthosethingsasstronglyasthoughthewriterhadstatedthem.Thedignityofmovementofanicebergisduetoonlyone-eighthofitbeingabovewater.Agoodwriterdoesnotneedtorevealeverydetailofacharacteroraction.”—ErnestHemingwayDeathintheAfternoon(Inotherwords,astorycancommunicatebysubtext.)whichisthetypicalHemingway’sstyle.AccordingtoHemingway,goodliterarywritingshouldbeabletomakereadersfeeltheemotionofthecharactersdirectlyandthebestwaytoproducetheeffectistosetdownexactlyeveryparticularkindoffeelingwithoutanyauthorialcomments,withoutconventionallyemotivelanguage,andwithabaremediumofadjectivesandadverbs.Seeminglysimpleandnatural,Hemingway’sstyleisactuallypolishedandtightlycontrolled,buthighlysuggestiveandconnotative.Thankyou!!!
