Acclaimedasaprodigy,IenteredintooneofChina’sIvyLeagueuniversitiesat14andjoinedthecountry’stopmostscientificresearchinstitutionasagraduatestudentat19.Nowanexperiencedengineerat26,IwouldliketoscalestillhigherintellectualheightsbyundertakingadvancedstudiesthatIhopewouldputmefirmlyonthecuttingedgeofscientificdevelopment.Ihavedemonstratedakeenmindsincemyearlychildhood.Foryears,Iconsistentlyoutperformedallofmyclassmatesinsuchchallengingsubjectsasmathematics,physicsandchemistry.Iwasthuschosentorepresenteithermyschoolormycityinavarietyofprovincialandnationalcontestsofacademicskills,inwhichIwonnumerousprizes.Thisimpressiveacademicrecordputmeonacademicaccelerationseveraltimes.Thatnotonlyenabledmetofinishmyprimaryandsecondaryeducationineightinsteadoftheusualtwelveyearsbutalsosentmeat14toaprivilegedclassforthegiftedattheChineseUniversityofScienceandTechnology,amajorcradleofthecountry’sscientificandtechnologicaltalents.Aftertwoyearsofbasictraininginthegiftedclass,Ichoseelectricalengineeringasmymajorandcomputersoftwareprogrammingasmyminor,convincedthatexpertiseinthesefieldswouldstandmeingoodsteadinaneraofChina’srapideconomicexpansionandtechnologicalmodernization.Asyoucanseefromthetranscriptsofmyundergraduategrades,Iexcelledinbothoftheseareas.Upongraduationin1991,IwoneasyacceptanceintotheInstituteofElectronicsundertheChineseAcademyofSciencesandbecameagraduatestudentat19,whenmostChinesestudentswouldbejuststartingtheiruniversityeducation.Atthisinstitute,Inarrowedmyacademicinterestdownandfocuseditontheareaofhumanandartificialintelligence,wherethecoursesItookweredeliberatelyconcentrated.Itseemedtomethatscientificbreakthroughswouldnextcomeinthisarea,whichmadeitbothchallengingandpromising.Ilearnedawholelotaboutthisareainthecourseifdoingmythesistitled“TheRadioShuntingSysteminRailroad”,forwhichsomeexperimentswereconductedonthebasisofartificialintelligence.MysolideducationpaidoffinmyabilitytotakeonavarietyofresponsibilitiesinChina’sburgeoningsoftwareindustry.AfterIobtainedmyMaster’sDegreeinEngineeringin1994,Ifirsttookupajobwithatelecommunicationcompany,whereImanagedatrunkcommunicationsystemthatresembledthecellularwirelesssystem.Ayearlater,IjoinedasoftwarecompanytodevelopCMISprogramforChina’sPostandTelecommunicationsMinistry.Itwasalargeproject,andImadecrucialcontributiontoitbyindependentlydevelopingandfinalizingonesubsystem,whichprovedtobeasignificantsuccessandwonmeprofuseappreciationfromusers.Afterthecompletionofthatproject,IhavebeenworkingfortheJapanBrotherLtd.intheareaofsoftwaredevelopment.Therelativesmoothpathofmycareernotwithstanding,Ihavenothadachancetoleadamajorproject,althoughIhavealwaysfinishedmypartofeveryprojectimmaculately.Inspiteofallmyachievements,IfeelthatIhavenottakenthefulladvantagesofmyintellectualcapabilities.InowwishtopursuestillmoreadvancedstudiesandtherebyobtainanadvanceddegreesothatIcanopenmoredoorsandshouldergreaterresponsibilities.IbelieveIhaveacquiredthenecessarytheoreticalframeworkandsufficientpracticalexperienceforfurtherstudies.MyabilitytoteachmyselfandconductindependentresearchallowsmetoattaincompetencequicklyinareasthatImayatfirstknowverylittleabout.Ineverworkjusttofinishanassignment,butinsteadIalwaystryconscientiouslytoimprovemyknowledgeandexpertisethroughtheworkIdo.Inthisfashion,Ihavebecomeseasonedinsuchfieldsastrunkingsystem(telecommunications)andCMISsystem(software).ThisqualityshouldhelpmeasIseektofurtherupgrademyeducation,particularlyifIhavereadyaccesstotheseasonedguidanceofastrongfacultyandtheconvenienceofstate-of-the-artresearchfacilities.TheUniversityofIdahoiswellknownforitsexcellenceintheE.Efield,completewithanaccomplishedfacultyandmodernresearchresources.Theseshouldsetagoodstageformetoexercisemykeenmentalpoweranddiligence.IfIamaccepted,IamconfidentthatIcanmakequickprogressintheE.Efield,especiallyintheareasofartificialintelligence,imageprocessing,wirelesscommunication,neuralnetworkandcomputernetworking,whichhavemanycharacteristicsincommonandsharemanyimportantprinciples.Duetothebroadapplicationsofthesetechnologies,Ibelievetheprogresswemakeintheseareaswillhelpshapethefutureofthemankind.Iwouldliketbeattheforefrontofsuchprogress.AsIambroadlygroundedinEEandcomputerscience,youmayfindmequalifiedormorequalifiedforadvancedstudiesinareasotherthanthoseIhavementioned.Ifso,Iwouldgreatlyappreciateitifyoucouldletmeknowanysuggestionsthatyoumayhave.IwishtoassureyouthatIhavethenecessaryEnglishlanguageskillstocompleteadvancedstudiesinyourPh.D.program.IgenerallyreadorwriteEnglishwithoutanydifficulty.Ihave,overtheyears,notonlyreadacademicorprofessionalmaterialsinEnglishavidlybutalsomemorizedthewholeEnglish-Chinesedictionary.TheremayberoomforimprovementinmyoralEnglishandEnglishlisteningcomprehension.ButIamsuremyEnglishproficiencyissufficientformetoundertakeadvancedstudiesandresearch.Besides,IbelieveIcanimprovemyoralEnglishbyleapsandboundsonceIstarttoliveinanEnglish-speakingenvironment.AllthatIneedtodoistosetmymindfree.IplantoreturntoChinaafterthecompletionofmyPh.D.studieseithertoteachatoneofthelargerChineseunivers
