I.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2018,1,52-58PublishedOnlineJanuary2018inMECS()DOI:10.5815/ijitcs.2018.01.06Copyright©2018MECSI.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2018,1,52-58AnAutomatedParkingGuidanceSystemforMegacitiesMonikaManglaResearchScholar,ThaparUniversity,Patiala,IndiaFaculty,LokmanyaTilakCollegeofEngineering,NaviMumbai,IndiaE-mail:manglamona@gmail.comDeepakGargProfessorandHead,BennettUniversity,GreaterNoida,IndiaE-mail:deepakgarg108@gmail.comReceived:16October2017;Accepted:03December2017;Published:08January2018Abstract—Enormousincreaseforvehiclesinthemegacities,withlimitedparkingcreatesaseriousissue.Inordertohandletheissue,manycitieshaveadoptedtheguidedparkingasapartofIntelligentTransportationSystem(ITS).ThecurrentITSiscontinuouslyevolvingtoincorporatetherequiredissues.ITScommunicatesamongvehiclesandparkingfacilitiesandsharestheinformationofinterest.ThereafterITSemploysdynamicinformationobtainedfromvehiclesforguidingtheparking.Inthecurrentwork,authorshavesuggestedtwofunctionsforparkingguidanceinthisstudy.Usingthesefunctions,centralserverusesthisdynamicinformationobtainedfromsensorynetworksandusesthesametosuggestparkingtothedriver.Thedriver,uponreceivingthesuggestion,inturnmayreservethesuggestedparkingormaychoosetodeclinethesuggestionbasedonhispersonalexperience.Theproposedapproachconsidersvariousparameterstoevaluateeffectivenessoftheguidedparking.Duringsimulation,theseparametershavebeendemonstratedanditisobservedthattheproposedsystemoutperformstheexistingsysteminliterature.IndexTerms—IntelligentTransportationSystem,Guidedparking,parkingreservationsystem,costfunction,ICT.I.INTRODUCTIONThenumberofcarshasbeencontinuouslyincreasingwhichhasbecomeadisasterformegacities.Thiscontinuousincreaseinthenumberofvehiclesposesmanyissueslikeincreaseintheroadaccidents,levelofpollutionandroadcongestionsetc.Alltheseissuesarerelatedtohealthofhumansandenvironmentandthusneedstobehandledwithutmostcareandimportance.Manyresearchershaveworkedtowardstheseissuesusingvarioustechnologies.Whilesurveyingtheliterature,itisobservedthatsufficientworkisavailableonrouteplanning,locationmodeling,anddeliveryplanningwhichallareindirectlyhandlingtheissuesraisedbycontinuousgrowthinthenumberofvehicles.Anotherissuewhichresultsbycontinuousgrowthinthenumberofvehiclesisparkingmanagement.Thisissueofparkingmanagementfurtherintricatewithlimitedparkingandthereforenecessitatesanintelligentparkingsolution.Withlimitedparking,manycarscanbeseencirclinginordertofindaparkingfacility,whichincreasesthetrafficandalsocausesenergyloss,environmentalpollutionetc.Thusoverthepastfewdecades,manyresearchershaveintensivelyworkedtohandleparkingmanagementinanefficientmannerbyprovidingaguidedparkingsolution.ManycitiesacrosstheglobearealreadyusingtheIntelligentTransportationSystem,althoughtheITSisstillinevolutionphase.TheemploymentoflatestadvancementsinInformationandCommunicationTechnology(ICT)furtherescalatestheguidingparkingsystembyprovidingdynamicinformationtothecentralserver.Centralserverusesthisdynamicinformationtosuggestaparkingtotherequestingdriverbysendingaparkingsuggestionmessage.Thisparkingsuggestionmessage(PSM)consistsofsuggestedparkingalongwithitstariff,distanceanddirectionfromcurrentlocation.Nowthedrivermaychooseamongtheparkingsuggestionsbasedonhisexperienceandknowledge.Ifthedriverchoosesamongstthesuggestedparkingoptions,hemaygoaheadandreserveone.Afteraparkinghasbeenreservedbydriver,itwillnotbeallocatedtoanyoneelseuntilthedriverapproachestheparkingorcancelsthereservation.Althoughthisreservationofparkingcallsforadditionalcost.Someoftheparkingmanagementsystemsrequiresharingofparkingalsowhereaparticularparkingmaybesharedforaparticularperiodoftheday.Forexampleparkinginresidentialareasmaybevacantduringofficehoursandthuscanbeutilizedbyothersifrequiredduringthistime.Initiallydifferenttypesofparkingwereusedseparatelybutoverthetimeitwasfeltthatsharingofparkingcouldimprovetheperformanceoftheguidedmanagementsystem.MoreoverthissharingofparkingspacesincreasestheavailableparkingslotsandthusresultsintobetterParkingManagementSystem.UsageofcommunicationtechnologyisthebackboneoftheoverallAnAutomatedParkingGuidanceSystemforMegacities53Copyright©2018MECSI.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2018,1,52-58parkingmanagementasitprovidesallrequiredinformationforparkingsuggestion.Thecurrentpaperisorganizedintovarioussections.SectionIofthepaperintroducestheparkingmanagementsystemanddiscussesitsbasics.ArchitectureoftheparkingmanagementsystemiselaboratedinsectionII.SectionIIIdiscussestherelatedworkdoneinthisarea.Thissectionalsopresentstheusageofvarioustechniquesandtheirfindingspresentintheliterature.SectionIVisdedicatedtoautomatedparkingguidancesystem.Thissectionfurtherdiscussestheproposedmodusoperandianddiscussesthevariousperformancemetrics.SimulationoftheproposedworkispresentedinsectionVanditisobservedthattheproposedsystemoutperformsexistingapproach.II.SYSTEMARCHITECTUREOFGUIDEDPARKINGSYSTEMThearchitectureoftheproposedguidedparkingsyste
