ANSI/ASMEB36.19M-1985AMERICANSTANDARD/AMERICANSOCIETYofMECHANICALENGINEERSWELDEDANDSEAMLESSWROUGHTSTEELPIPEAmericanNationalStandardforWeldedandSeamlessWroughtSteelPie(ANSI/ASMEB36.10m-1985)1FOREWORD(ThisForewordisnotpartofANSI.ASMEB36.19M-1985)ThisStandardforcorrosionresistantpiping,designatedcaregoricallyasstainless,isbasedonthesameprinciplesthatformedthebackgroundforthedeveleopmentofANSI/ASMEB36.10M,WeldedandSeamlessWroughtSteelPipe,andreferenceismadetothissourceofinformation.ThewallthicknessesshownforSchedules40Sand80SareidenticalwiththoseofSchedules40and80inANSI/ASMEB36,10Mexceptinthe12in.sizeinSchedule40Sandthe10in.and12in.sizesinSchedule80S.ThethicknessforthesethreesizescorrespondstowallthicknessesofStandardwallandExtra-Strongwall.Themorerecentdevelopmentofthehighlyalloyedstainlesssteelshasbroughtaboutaminorconfictwithconvention.Withthesenewermaterials,theneedforstandardsisjustasgreatandthepresenttypesofthreadsarejustassatisfactory,buththebasiccostofthemetalismuchhigherandtheartoffusionweldinghasdevelopedconcurrently.Thecharacterofstainlesssteelpermitsthedesignofthin-wallpipingsystemswithoutfearofearlyfailureduetocorrosion,andtheuseoffusionweldingtojoinsuchpipinghaseliminatedthenecessityofthreadingit.Forthesereasons,thewallthicknessdimensionsshownunderSchedule10Shavebeendeveloped,basedontheconventionalformula,butthenmodifiedtocorrespondtothenearestBirminghamWireGage(B.W.G.)number.Followingpublicationofthe1949editiontheredevelopedademandforastilllighterwallpipe.ASchedule5Swasdeterminedcooperativelybyrepresentativesofchemicalcompanies,processingindustries,andmanufacturersofweldingfittings.ThiswasendorsedbytheASAAAChemicalIndustryCorrelatingCommitteeandtheManufacturersStandardizationSocietyoftheValveandFittingsIndustry.ThenewschedulewasincludedintherevisedstandardwhichwaasapprovedbyASA(nowANSI)onApril7,1952.In1956itwasrecommendedthatthewallthicknessof12in.5Sbelessened,andanewrevisionofthestandardwasissuedshortlyafteritsapprovalbyASA(nowANSI)onfebruary27,1957.Inthisfourthedition,dimensionswereexpandedbeyond12in.pipesizebyinclusionof,andreferenceto,ASTMSpecificationA409.ThisrevisionwasapprovedbyASA(nowANSI)onOctober29,1965.TheB36StandardsCommitteemenbershipwasaskedinMarch1970forrecommendationsastowhatactionshouldbetakenonANSIB36.19-1965since,accordingtoANSIprocedures,thisstandardwasdueforrevisionorreaffirmation.TheB36StandardsCommitteerecommendedreaffirmation.ThisactionwasapprovedbytheSecretariatandbytheAmericanNationalStandardsInstituteonMay26,1971.In1975theB36StandardsCommitteeundertookareviewofthestandard,consideringitsacceptabilityandusefulness.Theresultswerefavorable;someeditiorialrefinementsandupdatingwereproposedalongwiththeincorporationoffactorsforconversiontoSI(metric)units.TherevisionwasapprovedbytheStandardsCommittee,theSecretariat,andsubsequentlytheAmericanNationalStandardsInstituteonOctober4,1976.Thisstandardwasrevisedin1984toincludeSImetricdimensions.Theoutsidediameterandwallthicknesseswereconvertedtomillimentersbymultiplyingtheinchdimensionsby25.4.Outsidediameterslargerthan16in.wereroundedtothenearest1mm,andoutsidediameters16in.andsmallerwereroundedtothenearest0.1mm.Wallthicknesseswereroundedtothenearest0.01mm.TheseconvertedandroundedSImetricdimensionswereaddedinTable2A.AformulatocalculatetheSImetricplainendmass,kg/m,usingSImetricdiametersandthicknesses,wasaddedtoSection5.TheSImetricplainendmasswascalculatedforeachsizeandthickness,andaddedinTable3A.ThesechangesinthestandardwereapprovedbythestandardsCommittee,theSponsor,andtheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute,anditwasdesignatedanAmericanNationalStandardonOctober7,1985.-----------------------------------------------1ReprintedbypermissionoftheAmericanSocietyofMechanicalEngineers,345East47thSt.,NewYork,NY10017.AMERICANNATIONALSTANDARD/AMERICANSOCIETYOFMECHANICALENGINEERSSTAINLESSSTEELPIPE1.ScopeThisStandardcoversthestandardizationofdimensionsofweldedandseamlesswroughtstainlesssteelpipe.Thewordpipeisusedasdistinguishedfromtubetoapplytotubularproductsofdimensionscommonlyusedforpipelineandpipingsystems.Pipedimensionsofsizes12andsmallerhaveoutsidediametersnumericallylargerthanthecorrespondingsize.Incontrast,theoutsidediametersoftubesarenumericallyidenticaltothesizenumberforallsizes.Thewallthicknessesforsizes14throught22inclusiveofSchedule10S,forsize12ofSchedule40S,andthoseofANSI/ASMEB36.10M.ThesuffixSintheScheduleNumberisusedtodifferentiateB36.19MpipefromB36.10Mpipe.ANSI/ASMEB36.10MINcludesotherpipethicknesseswhicharealsocommerciallyavailablewithstainlesssteelmaterial.2.SizeThesizeofallpipeinTables2through3Aisidentifiedbythenominalpipesize.Themanufactureofpipeintheinchnominalsizesof1/8-12inclusiveisbasedonastandardizedoutsidediameter(O.D.).ThisO.D.wasoriginallyselectedsothatpipewithastandardO.D.andhavingawallthicknesswhichwastypicaloftheperiodwouldhaveaninsidediameter(I.D.)approximatelyequaltothenominalsize.Althoughthereisnosuchrelationbetweentheexistingstandardthicknesses-O.D.andnominalsize-thesenominalsizesandstandardO.D.'scontinueinuseasstandard
