ThedisillusionoftheAmericandream-TheGreatGatsbybookreviewTheGreatGatsbyistherepresentativeworkofAmericanwriterFrancisScottFitzgerald.Itisatruereflectionof1920s.ThebookisaclassicalnovelandhasprofoundmeaningoftheessenceoftheAmericandream’sillusory.ThewritershowedtheAmericansocialaftertheWorldWarIinthebook.ItuncoversthemoneyworshipandhedonismintheJazzAgeandpeople’sselfishnessandindifferenceinthattime.WhatthenoveldescribesisatragicstoryaboutthedisillusionoftheAmericandream.ThestoryhappenedaftertheWorldWarI.AyoungbusinessmannamedNickCarrawayrentahouseintheLongIsland.IntheoppositehousethereliveshiscousinDaisyBuchananandherhusbandTomBuchanan.InthevillanextlivesJayGatsby.Gatsbyholdsbigpartyeveryweekendinhisvillabutthereisfewpeoplehasseenhisface.AfterawhileNickknowsthatwhenGatsbywasasoldier,hefellinlovewithDaisy.However,DaisyfinallymarriedwitharichmanTomBuchanan.Whenthewarisended,Gatsbybegantodoillegalbusinessandbecomeamillionaireinhighsociety.InordertodrawDaisy’sattention,heboughtabighouseinoppositetoDaisy’sandoftenholdsbigparty.GatsbyandDaisymeetagaininthehelpofNick.WhenthisisknownbyTom,heisburstintoangerandtheyhaveaquarrel.Withextremelynervous,DaisydrivesthecarandkilledTom’smistressMyrtleaccidentally.However,TomsuggestsMyrtle’shusbandWilsonthatitisGatsbywhokilledherwife.InextremeangerWilsonshootGatsbyandsuicide.Intheendofthebook,whenNickheldafuneralforGatsby,noneofhisoldfriendsjoin.NickisdisappointedtothedarkhighsocietyofNewYorksoheleavethecityandgobacktohishomeintheAmericanMidwest.ThethemeofthenovelistopresentthetragedyoftheAmericandream’sdisillusionbyshowingthestoryofGatsby’spursuingofdream.Theso-calledAmericandreammeansthatinAmericaeveryoneisequalityofopportunity.Peoplecanrealizetheirdreamandachievesuccessjustbythemselves’struggle.TheAmericandreamhasalwaysbeenanidealthatpeopleareconvincedofandpursueof.ItisakindofspiritualstrengththatpromoteAmericatodevelopingandflourishingquickly.AftertheWorldWarI,AmericahasenteredintoanunprecedentederaofprosperityandtheAmericandreambecomingacrazyworshiptomoney.Thewindofmoneyworshipprevailing.SotheAmericandreamhasbeendeterioratedasthesocialdevelop.Inthisnovel,theshortlifeofGatsbyhasgothroughtheprocessofdreamfromstarttoburst.ItsymbolizetheriseandburstoftheAmericandreamatthesametime.OnesideofhisAmericanDreamisthedreamofmoney.Herealizethisdreambyillegalbusinesswhichmadehimfromapoorboytoamillionaire.However,theothersideofhisdreamisthedreamofloveanditmakehimintoasadending.Infact,hislovingdreamisanotherformofhismoneydream.AtfirstwhenhefellinlovewithDaisy,hewasattractedbyhermateriallife.HeyearnsfornotsomuchDaisy’sloveasDaisy’shighsocietylife.Daisyisthecombinationofloveandmoneywhichhe’slongingfor.Sheistherepresentofabeautifullife.However,inreallife,DaisyisfarfromwhatGatsbyimagine.Sheisaselfish,shallowandtimidgirlandallshewantsismoneyandhighsocietylife.FinallyGatsby’sdreambrokenanditalsosymbolizethebrokenoftheAmericandream.TheessenceofthetragedyofGatsbyisthetragedyofAmericanidealism.Butthenagain,althoughGatsby’seffortdidnotpayoff,hisspiritofstrugglingtorealizehisdreamandchangethefateismovinganddeservesouradmirationandlearning.
