ItishardforHaskellprogrammerstounderstandthedetailsofthetypesystem,andtoappreciatewhysomeprogramsareacceptedwhenothersarenot.For-malpresentationsofmostaspectsofthetypesystemareavailableintheresearchliterature,butoftenab-stractonspeci cfeaturesthatareHaskell-like,butnotHaskell-exact,anddonotdescribethecompletetypesystem.Moreover,thesepapersoftenusedisparateandunfamiliartechnicalnotationandconceptsthatmaybehardforsomeHaskellprogrammerstounderstand. ItishardforHaskellresearcherstoexplorenewtypesystemextensions,oreventostudyusabilityissuesthatarisewiththepresenttypesystemsuchasthesearchforbettertypeerrordiagnostics.Workintheseareasrequiresaclearunderstandingofthetypesystemand,ideally,aplatformonwhichtobuildandexperiment1Throughout,weuse‘Haskell’asanabbreviationfor‘Haskell98’.withprototypeimplementations.TheexistingHaskellimplementationsarenotsuitableforthis(andwerenotintendedtobe):thenutsandboltsofatypesystemareeasilyobscuredbytheuseofspeci cdatastructuresandoptimizations,orbytheneedtointegratesmoothlywithotherpartsofanimplementation.ThispaperpresentsaformaldescriptionoftheHaskelltypesystemusingthenotationofHaskellitselfasaspeci cationlanguage.Indeed,thesourcecodeforthispaperisitselfanexecutableHaskellprogramthatispassedthroughacustompreprocessorandthenthroughLATEXtoobtainthetypesetversion.ThetypecheckerisavailableinsourceformontheInternetat
