ReadingJournalITitle:TheBrilliantChristmasPresentDuringPage1to89inthenovelTheGlassCastle,whatimpressedmemostwastheplotthatDadgaveJeannetteVenusforChristmaspresentandtoldhermanyinterestingthingsaboutthesky.WhenthatChristmascoming,Dadhadlosthisjobandthefamilyalmostranoutofmoney.JeannettewasonlyfiveandneitherdidshenorhersiblingsbelievedthereisFatherChristmasandhesendsgiftstoeverychildonChristmas.Theirparentswouldn’tgivethempresentsandcouldn’tafforditaswell.OnthatChristmas,DadletJeannettechooseastarforpresentandshechosetheplanetVenus.DadgaveittoJeannetteasauniquepresentandrouseherinterestabouttheuniverse.Itwaspermanentthatmanyyearslatershestillownedthespecialgift.Dadwasanabnormalpersonandhisthoughtsalwayscreativeandideal,Isuppose;andhewasageniusandlovedmath,physicsandscientificreasonverymuch.Soitmightbereasonableforhimtogivehisdaughtersuchanunusualgiftandmadeherashappyasotherchild.Inmyopinion,givingVenustoJeannettehasmoremeaningthanthegiftitself.Fromthenovelweknow,itwasthefirstgiftJeannettereceivedanditwasdifferentfromhersiblings,evenwasdifferentfromeverychildintheworld.Thosearewhatwecanlearnfromthenoveldirectly.What’smore,wecandrawthatagiftlikeplanetissupposedtobeaseverlastinganduniqueasVenus.ItwillbeatreasuretoJeannetteinherwholelife,nomattersheispoororrich,unfortunateorhappy.WhenshegrewupandmovedtoNewYorkCity,thoughshecouldn’tseeVenusbecauseofthelightpollution,shewouldrememberherbrilliantchildhoodandhergeniusfathergavehertheplanetforgift.Thesememorieswouldlightuphermindandinspireherwithcouragedoingwhatshedointhefuturelife.
