InspiteofeverythingIstillbelievethatpeoplearereallygoodatheart.Isimplycan’tbuildupmyhopesonafoundationconsistingofconfusion,misery,anddeath.AnneFrankIagreewithher.Iseetheworldgraduallybeingturnedintoawilderness.Iheartheapproachingthunder,whichwilldestroyustoo.IcanfeelthesufferingofmillionsandyetifIlookupintotheheaven.But,everyonehasinsideofhimapieceofgoodnews.Thegoodnewsisthatyoudon’tknowhowgreatyoucanbe,howmuchyoucanlove,whatyoucanaccomplishandwhatyourpotentialis!Howwonderfulitisthatnobodyneedstowaitasinglemomentbeforestartingtoimprovetheworld.(12June1929–earlyMarch1945)isoneofthemostrenownedandmostdiscussedJewishvictimsoftheHolocaust.Acknowledgedforthequalityofherwriting,herdiaryhasbecomeoneoftheworld'smostwidelyreadbooks,andhasbeenthebasisforseveralplaysandfilms.AnneFrankBorninthecityofFrankfurtamMaininWeimarGermany,shelivedmostofherlifeinornearAmsterdam,intheNetherlands.Bynationality,shewasofficiallyconsideredaGermanuntil1941,whenshelosthernationalityowingtotheanti-SemiticpoliciesofNaziGermany(theNurembergLaws).Shegainedinternationalfameposthumouslyfollowingthepublicationofherdiary,whichdocumentsherexperienceshidingduringtheGermanoccupationoftheNetherlandsinWorldWarII.TheFrankfamilymovedfromGermanytoAmsterdamin1933,theyeartheNazisgainedcontroloverGermany.Bythebeginningof1940,theyweretrappedinAmsterdambytheNazioccupationoftheNetherlands.AspersecutionsoftheJewishpopulationincreasedinJuly1942,thefamilywentintohidinginthehiddenroomsofAnne'sfather,OttoFrank's,officebuilding.Aftertwoyears,thegroupwasbetrayedandtransportedtoconcentrationcamps.AnneFrankandhersister,Margot,wereeventuallytransferredtotheBergen-Belsenconcentrationcamp,wheretheybothdiedoftyphusinMarch1945.OttoFrank,theonlysurvivorofthefamily,returnedtoAmsterdamafterthewartofindthatAnne'sdiaryhadbeensaved,andhiseffortsledtoitspublicationin1947.ItwastranslatedfromitsoriginalDutchandfirstpublishedinEnglishin1952asTheDiaryofaYoungGirl.Ithassincebeentranslatedintomanylanguages.Thediary,whichwasgiventoAnneonher13thbirthday,chroniclesherlifefrom12June1942until1August1944.TheapartmentblockontheMerwedepleinwheretheFrankfamilylivedfrom1934until1942ReconstructionofthebookcasethatcoveredtheentrancetotheSecretAnnex,intheAnneFrankHouseinAmsterdamMemorialforMargotandAnneFrankattheformerBergen-Belsensite,alongwithfloralandpictorialtributesNow,weallknowthisquotecomesfromAnne’sDiary.Toseeherhopeinthefaceofsuchutterdespairandhumanevilrendstheheartofthereader.ThisquoterevealsagreatextendtowhichAnnehasevolvedinherthinking.Itreallyisatestimonytothevoicethatshecouldhavebeenandthethinkertheworldsorelymissed.While,thebleaknessisevident.Thereisanuniquetoneofhopethateverythingwillworkoutintheend.Thisisanuniquelyhumanapproachtoenduringasituationwhichisaboutasfarfromhumanasonecanget.Tome,Ithinkitwillallcomeright,thiscrueltytoowillend,andthatpeaceandtranquilitywillreturnagain.“IfinallyrealizedthatImustdomyschoolworktokeepfrombeingignorant,togetoninlife,tobecomeajournalist,becausethat’swhatIwant!IknowIcanwrite...,butitremainstobeseenwhetherIreallyhavetalent...AndifIdon’thavethetalenttowritebooksornewspaperarticles,Icanalwayswriteformyself.ButIwanttoachievemorethanthat.Ican’timaginelivinglikeMother,Mrs.vanDaanandallthewomenwhogoabouttheirworkandarethenforgotten.Ineedtohavesomethingbesidesahusbandandchildrentodevotemyselfto!...Iwanttobeusefulorbringenjoymenttoallpeople,eventhoseI’venevermet.Iwanttogoonlivingevenaftermydeath!Andthat’swhyI’msogratefultoGodforhavinggivenmethisgift,whichIcanusetodevelopmyselfandtoexpressallthat’sinsideme!WhenIwriteIcanshakeoffallmycares.Mysorrowdisappears,myspiritsarerevived!But,andthat’sabigquestion,willIeverbeabletowritesomethinggreat,willIeverbecomeajournalistorawriter?”—AnneFrankShecontinuedwritingregularlyuntilherfinalentryofAugust1,1944.Books&FilmsBooks&FilmsStatueofAnneFrank,byMariAndriessen,outsidetheWesterkerkinAmsterdamLifeiswonderful
