24TM15-2013AATCCTechnicalManual/2014Developedin1949byAATCCCommit-teeRR52;jurisdictiontransferredtoAATCCCommitteeRA23in2006;re-vised1952,1957,1960,1962,1972,1973,1975,1976,1997,2009;2013,reaffirmed1967,1979,1985,1989,2007;editoriallyrevised1961,1967,1974,1981,1983,1986,1995,2004,2005,2008,2010;editoriallyrevisedandreaffirmed1994,2002.RelatedtoISO105-E04.1.PurposeandScope1.1Thistestmethodisusedtodeter-minethefastnessofcoloredtextilestotheeffectsofacidperspiration.Itisappli-cabletodyed,printedorotherwisecol-oredtextilefibers,yarnsandfabricsofallkindsandtothetestingofdyestuffsasappliedtotextiles.1.2WorkbyCommitteeRA52showedthistestwillcorrelatewithlimitedfieldstudies.Priortothistherewereacidandalkalinetests;however,asaresultofthesestudiesthealkalinetestwaselimi-nated(see13.1).2.Principle2.1Aspecimenofcoloredtextileincontactwithotherfibermaterials(forcolortransfer)iswetoutinsimulatedacidperspirationsolution,subjectedtoafixedmechanicalpressureandallowedtodryslowlyataslightlyelevatedtempera-ture.Afterconditioning,thespecimenisevaluatedforcolorchangeandtheotherfibermaterialsareevaluatedforcolortransfer.3.Terminology3.1colorfastness,n.—theresistanceofamaterialtochangeinanyofitscolorcharacteristics,totransferofitscolo-rant(s)toadjacentmaterialsorboth,asaresultoftheexposureofthematerialtoanyenvironmentthatmightbeencoun-teredduringtheprocessing,testing,stor-ageoruseofthematerial.3.2perspiration,n.—asalinefluidse-cretedbythesweatglands.4.SafetyPrecautionsNOTE:Thesesafetyprecautionsareforinformationpurposesonly.Thepre-cautionsareancillarytothetestingproce-duresandarenotintendedtobeallinclu-sive.Itistheuser’sresponsibilitytousesafeandpropertechniquesinhandlingmaterialsinthistestmethod.Manufac-turersMUSTbeconsultedforspecificdetailssuchasmaterialsafetydatasheetsandothermanufacturer’srecommenda-tions.AllOSHAstandardsandrulesmustalsobeconsultedandfollowed.4.1Followgoodlaboratorypractices.Wearsafetyglassesinalllaboratoryareas.4.2Allchemicalsshouldbehandledwithcare.4.3Observepaddersafety.Normalsafeguardsonpadshouldnotbere-moved.Ensureadequateguardatthenippoint.Afootoperatedkickoffisrecom-mendedforamotorizedpadder.5.Apparatus,MaterialsandReagents(see13.2)5.1Perspirationtester(plasticorglassplatesareavailablewiththeequipment)(seeFigs.1and2).5.2Dryingoven—convection.5.3Balancewithaweighingaccuracyof±0.001g.5.4Multifibertestfabric(8mm[0.33in.]bands)containingacetate,cotton,ny-lon,silk,viscoserayonandwoolshallbeusedforspecimenscontainingsilk.Mul-tifibertestfabric(8mm[0.33in.]bands)containingacetate,cotton,nylon,polyes-ter,acrylicandwoolshallbeusedwithspecimenswithnosilkpresent(see13.3).5.5pHmeteraccurateto±0.01.5.6AATCC9-StepChromaticTrans-ferenceScale(AATCCEvaluationProce-dure8)orGrayScaleforStaining(AATCCEvaluationProcedure2)(see13.4).5.7GrayScaleforColorChange(AATCCEvaluationProcedure1)(see13.4).5.8Wringer.5.9WhiteAATCCTextileBlottingPaper(see13.4).5.10Acidperspirationsolution.6.PreparationofReagent6.1Preparetheacidperspirationsolu-tionbyfillinga1Lvolumetricflaskhalffullofdistilledwater.Addthefollowingchemicalsandmixtobesurethatallchemicalsarethoroughlydissolved:10±0.01gsodiumchloride(NaCl)1±0.01glacticacid,USP85%1±0.01gsodiumphosphate,dibasic,anhydrous(Na2HPO4)0.25±0.001gA-histidinemonohydro-chloride(C6H9N3O2⋅HCl⋅H2O)Fillthevolumetricflaskwithdistilledwatertothe1Lmark.6.2TestthepHofthesolutionwithapHmeter.Ifitisnot4.3±0.2discarditandprepareanewone,makingsureallingredientsareweighedaccurately.TheuseofpHtestpaperisnotrecommendedforthispurposebecauseofitslackofaccuracy.6.3Donotuseperspirationsolutionthatismorethanthreedaysold(see13.5).7.Verification7.1Verificationchecksontheopera-tionofthetestandapparatusshouldbemaderoutinelyandtheresultskeptinalog.Thefollowingobservationsandcor-rectiveactionsareextremelyimportanttoavoidincorrecttestresults.7.2Useanin-houseperspirationfabricwithamid-rangevisualgradeonthemostheavilystainedstripeofthemultifi-berclothasacalibrationspecimenandconductaperspirationtestusingthreespecimens.Verificationchecksshouldbeperformedperiodicallyaswellaseachtimeanewlotofmultifiberorundyedad-jacentfabricisused.7.2.1Non-uniformcolortransfermaybeduetoimproperwet-outproceduresormaybearesultofunevenpressureonthespecimensduetowarpedplatesinthetester.Checkthewet-outprocedurestobesurethatthebalanceisaccurateandthattheprocedureisbeingcarefullyfol-lowed.Checkallplatestobesuretheyareingoodconditionandnotwarped.AATCCTestMethod15-2013ColorfastnesstoPerspirationFig.1—Horizontalperspirationtester.Copyright©2013AmericanAssociationofTextileChemistsandColoristsAATCCTechnicalManual/2014TM15-2013258.TestSpecimens8.1Numberandsizeofspecimens.8.1.1Ifthespecimentobetestedisafabric,attachapieceofmultifiberadja-centfabricmeasuring5×5±0.2cmtothespecimenmeasuring6×6±0.2cmbysewingalongoneoftheshortersides,withthemultifiberfabricnexttothefaceofthespecimen.8.1.2Ifthespecimentobetestedisayarnorloosefiber,takeamassoftheyarnorloosefiberapproximatelyequaltoonehalfofthecombinedmassoftheadjacentfabrics.Placeitbetweena5×5±0.2cmpieceofmultifiberfabrican
