WirelessPersCommun(2011)56:117–130DOI10.1007/s11277-009-9881-2AStudyonGreenhouseAutomaticControlSystemBasedonWirelessSensorNetworkDae-HeonPark·Beom-JinKang·Kyung-RyongCho·Chang-SunShin·Sung-EonCho·Jang-WooPark·Won-MoYangPublishedonline:4December2009©SpringerScience+BusinessMedia,LLC.2009AbstractThesystemproposedinthispapercollectstemperatureofleavesandhumidityonleavesofcrop.Aswellasgreenhouseenvironmentalinformationsuchastemperature,humidity,etc.Cropdiseases,especially,havedeeprelationshipnotonlywithindoorenvi-ronmentalfactorsbutalsowithhumiditylastingtimeonleavesandtemperatureofleaves.Accordingly,monitoringcropitselfisasimportantasmonitoringindoorenvironments.Usingthesecollectedgreenhouseenvironmentaldata,indoorenvironmentscanbemoreeffectivelycontrolled,andmonitoringcropitselfcancontributetoimproveproductivityandtopreventcropsfromdamagesbyblightandharmfulinsects.Inaddition,itwillbepossibleforfarmerstodocontrolplantgrowththroughcloselystudyingrelationshipbetweenindoorenviron-mentalinformationandmonitoredinformationoncropitself.Collecteddatacanbestoredtodatabaseeitherinserverinstalledingreenhouseortoremoteserver.Itismadepossi-bletocollectinformationandcontroleffectivelyandautomaticallygreenhouseinthesiteorfromaremoteplacethroughwebbrowser.Systemcomponentsare:temperaturesensor,D.-H.Park·B.-J.Kang·K.-R.Cho·C.-S.Shin·S.-E.Cho·J.-W.Park(B)DepartmentofInformationandCommunicationEngineering,SunchonNationalUniversity,Sunchon,SouthKoreae-mail:jwpark@sunchon.ac.krD.-H.Parke-mail:dhpark@sunchon.ac.krB.-J.Kange-mail:Neverkbj@nate.comK.-R.Choe-mail:jkl@sunchon.ac.krC.-S.Shine-mail:csshin@sunchon.ac.krS.-E.Choe-mail:chose@sunchon.ac.krW.-M.YangDepartmentofHorticultureandVegetationMedical,SunchonNationalUniversity,Sunchon,SouthKoreae-mail:ywm@sunchon.ac.kr123118D.-H.Parketal.humiditysensor,leaftemperaturesensor,leafhumiditysensor,Zigbeebasedwirelesssensornode,relaynodesforautomaticcontrol,anddataservertostoregreenhouseinformation.Thesystemisimplementedusinglowpowerwirelesscomponents,andeasytoinstall.KeywordsGreenhouse·Auto-control·Sensornetwork·Monitoring1IntroductionInthelastseveraldecades,systemsforGreenhousemanagementhavebeengreatlydeveloped,inwhichkindsofsensorshavebeenusedtomeasurevariousinformationoftheenvironment.Mostofthetypicalsystemshavemostlybeendevelopedbasedonwiredutilities.Thewiredsystemslimitedeasyinstallationandextensionabilityandincreasedmaintenancecosts.WirelessSensorNetworkbasedsystemsarebelievedtoeliminatetheconsiderablecostsofjustwiring[1–4].Also,theextensivefarmorgreenhouserequiresthemonitoringsystemorthecontrolsystemtobebuiltwirelessly.Wirelesssensornetworkalsowillhelpimproveexistingsystemsinstalledthegreenhouseefficientlyandeasilybyradio[5].Inthispaper,weproposeasystemthatcancollecttheinformationrelatedtogreenhouseenvironmentandcropstatusandcontrolthegreenhouseautomaticallybasedonthecol-lectedinformation.Conventionalgreenhousecontrolsystemshavemonitoredmainlytheenvironmentdatasuchasambienttemperatureandhumidityinthegreenhouse.Thesedataareveryimportantinthecontrolofgreenhouseenvironmentbecausethegrowthofplantsisveryaffectedwiththesevalues.However,precisediagnosisofthecropgrowthstatusorthecropdiseaserequiresmorevariousdatathanambienttemperatureorhumidity.Cropdiseases,especially,havedeeprelationshipnotonlytoindoorenvironmentalfactorsbutalsotohumiditylastingtimeofleavesandtemperatureofleaves.Accordingly,monitoringcropitselfisasimportantasmonitoringindoorenvironments.Thesystemproposedinthispaperisdesignedbasedontheplant’stemperatureandhumid-ityremainedontheleavesoftheplant.Thisisthedistinctfeatureoftheproposedsystem.Thetemperatureofleavesandthehumidityonleavesofthecropsarekeyfactorsforthesystemtocontrolandmaintaintheenvironmentconditionofthegreenhouse.Thesystemcancollectenvironmentinformationinsidegreenhouseusingtemperatureandhumiditysen-sorsandcollectstemperatureandhumidityofcropleavesusingleaftemperaturesensorandleafhumiditysensor.Inthissystem,itisabletopossibletomeasurethecropstatuschangecausedbyenvironmentfactorsinsidegreenhouse.Also,thesystemisabletobeutilizedtocloselyexaminetherelationbetweenenvironmentalinformationandcropgrowthstatusandespeciallycropdisease.Also,oursystemcanapplytheefficientautomaticcontrolsystemofgreenhouseenvironmenttopreventthecropdisease.2TheoreticalBackgroundInaclosedgreenhouse,whentheweatherissunnyeventhoughitiswinter,therearesomecasesthatindoortemperaturerisesandcropsdamages[6].Onthecontrary,atnighttimewithalotofheatemissionloss,temperaturedropstooutsidetemperatureorevenbecomelower.Therefore,althoughitistheinsideofagreenhouse,therearesometemperaturechangesaccordingtotimeofdayorchangeofseasonsandthechangeswillbeabletohindergrowthofcrops.Ontheotherhand,changesinindoortemperaturewillcausechangesincroptem-perature,affectinggrowthofcropsbecausethereactiontimeofeachprocess,whichsupports123AStudyonGreenhouseAutomaticControlSystemBasedonWirelessSensorNetwork119Table1Classificationofvegetableaccordingtotemperatureadaptation[8]CropsTemperatureSettingtemperatureDaytime(◦C)Nighttime(◦
