人教修订版高中三年级Unit9ListeningRevision1.WhocansaysomethingaboutWHO?TheWorldHealthOrganizationistheUnitedNations’specializedagencyforhealth.ItwasestablishedonApril7th,1948.WHO’sobjectiveistorealizethehighestpossiblelevelofhealthofallpeopleintheworld.HealthisdefinedinWHO’sConstitutionasastateofcompletephysical,mentalandsocialwell-beingandnotmerelytheabsenceofdiseaseorinfirmity.WHOisgovernedby192memberstatesthroughtheWorldHealthAssembly.TheHealthAssemblyiscomposedofrepresentativesfromWHO’sMemberStates.ThemaintasksoftheWorldHealthAssemblyaretoapprovetheWHOprogrammeandthebudgetforthefollowingbienniumandtodecidemajorpolicyquestions.2.DoyouthinkthatWHOplaysanimportantroleinimprovingtheworld’shealth?Youcanexplainthereasonbygivingexamples.IthinkWHOplaysanimportantroleinimprovingtheworld’shealth.Forexample,lastwinter,aterribletsunamibrokeoutintheIndianOcean.Alargenumberofpeoplelosttheirlivesinthedisaster,andtherewerealsoahugenumberofpeoplewholosttheirhomes.Manyofthemsufferedfrombadlivingconditionsandbadsanitation,thusterribleplaguebrokeoutthere.WHOwasoneofthefirstonestogivehelptothepeople,anditdidmakeadifference.Listeningalcohol:drugabuse:outbreak:wine.usingdrugwronglyorimproperlyasuddeneruptionofsomethingPart1Part2ListeningTextPart1TheWorldHealthOrganisation,orWHO,wascreatedbytheUnitedNationsin1948.ThegoaloftheWHOistohelppeopleallovertheworldtoliveahealthylife.Inordertoreachthisgoal,theWHOrunsprogrammestofightdiseases,improvesanitation,andstopalcohol,tobaccoandotherdrugabuse.OneoftheWHO’sgreatestsuccessestodateisplayingamajorpartinfreeingtheworldfromsmallpox,whichwasonceafeareddisease.TheorganisationhasalsohelpedlimitthebadinfluenceofnewdiseaseslikeSARSandHIV/AIDS.ThedefeatofsmallpoxisagoodexampleofhowtheWHOworks.Smallpoxisacontagiousdiseasethatcausesblindnessandevendeath.Inthe10thcentury,Chinesedoctorsdiscoveredthathealthypeoplewhoweregivensmalldosesofsmallpoxbecameimmunetothedisease.Atthetime,however,thismethodwasnotsafeanddidn’talwayswork.Later,inthe18thcentury,aBritishdoctorfoundasaferwaytoprotectpeopleagainstthedisease.Butitwasnotuntil1967,whentheWHOstartedalargeprogrammetofightsmallpox,thatpeoplecouldgetprotectioninaneasyandsafeway.TheWHOprogrammereachedpeopleeverywhereandputastoptothespreadofthedisease.In1977,thelastsmallpoxcaseoccurred.Threeyearslater.Withnonewcases,theWHOdeclaredthattheworldwasfreefromsmallpox.Part2TheWHOisalsoworkingtopreventandtreatdiseaseslikeAIDSandpolio.Severalprogrammesexistthatareaimedatimprovinghealthcareintheworldandprotectingpeopleagainstnewdiseases.In2003,theworldsawanewandfrighteningdisease.AnunknownvirusinfectedpeopleinChinaandmanypeoplediedofit.ScientistsanddoctorssoondiscoveredthevirusandcalleditSARS.Becauseofmoderntransportation,SARSquicklyspreadtootherpartsoftheworld.CanadaandChinawereamongtheworstaffectedareas.Thegovernmentstriedtheirbesttostopthediseasefromspreadingandquicklyarrangedhospitals,nursesanddoctorstotreattheSARSvictims.Peoplewhoweretravellinghadtochecktheirtemperaturesandtellwheretheyweregoingandwhomtheywouldvisit.TheWHOplayedanimportantrole.Itworkedtogetherwiththegovernmentstocontroltheoutbreak.Asaninternationalorganisationwithmanyyearsofexperienceofdealingwithdiseases,theWHOcouldprovidewarnings,informationandhelp.Asaresult,thediseasewascontrolledandpreventionmeasureswereputinplacetomakesurethatanynewoutbreakcouldbedealtwithinagoodway.Canyoulistsomeotherinternationalorganizations?Andwhataretheirfunctions?SA:IwanttosaysomethingaboutUNESCO,whichstandsfortheUnitedNationsEducational,ScientificandCulturalOrganiza-tion.ItwasfoundedonNovember16th,1945.Today,UNESCOfunctionsasalaboratoryofideasandastandard-settertoforgeuniversalagreementsonemergingethicalissues.TheOrganizationalsoservesasaclearinghouse—forthedisseminationandsharingofinformationandknowledge—whilehelpingMemberStatestobuildtheirhumanandinstitutionalcapacitiesindiversefields.Inshort,UNESCOpromotesinternationalco-operationamongits191MemberStatesandsixAssociateMembersinthefieldsofeducation,science,cultureandcommunication.SB:IwanttotalkaboutUN.UNstandsfortheUnitedNations,itwasestablishedonOctober24th,1945by51countries.Itsfunctionistopreservepeacethroughinternationalcooperationandcollectivesecurity.Today,thereare191countrieswhicharethemembersoftheUN.ListeningonP209CommonColdIthinkmostofushavetheexperienceofsufferingfromthecommoncold.Itiscausedbyviruses.Sneezing,scratchythroat,runnynoseusuallyarethefirstsignsofacold.Thecommoncoldisusuallymild,withsymptomslasting1to2weeks.Toprotectourselves,weshouldtrytoavoidgoingtopublicplacesoften.CancerWeallknowthatcertainchangesinourcellscancausecancer.Somekindsofcancerarecausedbythingspeopledo.Smokingcancausecancersofthelungs,mouth,throat,andseveralotherorgans.Radiationcancausecancer.Toomuchexposuretosunlightwithoutanyprotectioncancauseskincancer.Nowadays,cancerisstilladiseasethatcannotbecured.Soweshouldpaymoreattentiontoourlifestyle.AIDSAIDSiscausedbythevirusHIV.IfapersongetsAIDS,hisorherimmunesystemwillbedestroyed,andheorshewillbecomesick,atlast,heorshewilldie.SARSCoronavirusis
