RemarksbyPresidentObamaandPresidentHuofthePeople'sRepublicofChinainanExchangeofToastsatStateDinnerStateDiningRoom7:51P.M.ESTPRESIDENTOBAMA:Goodevening,everybody.Pleasehaveaseat.OnbehalfofMichelleandmyself,welcometotheWhiteHouse.AndthankyouforjoiningusaswehostPresidentHuandtheChinesedelegation,andaswepaytributetothebondsbetweentwogreatnationsandtwoproudpeoples.Therearetoomanydistinguishedgueststomentionallofyoutonight.ButIdowanttoacknowledgeafewwhohavechampionedrelationsbetweenournations:Firstofall,PresidentJimmyCarterandhiswonderfulwifeRosalynnCarterarehere.(Applause.)AswellasPresidentBillClintonandmyoutstandingSecretaryofState,HillaryClinton.(Applause.)PresidentHu,wehavemettodayinaspiritofmutualrespect:theUnitedStates--theoldestdemocracyintheworld,andChina--oneoftheoldestcivilizationsintheworld.Andwhileit’seasytofocusonourdifferencesofcultureandperspective,letusneverforgetthevaluesthatourpeopleshare:Areverenceforfamily;thebeliefthat,witheducationandhardworkandwithsacrifice,thefutureiswhatwemakeit;andmostofall,thedesiretogiveourchildrenabetterlife.Let’salsoneverforgetthatthroughoutourhistoryourpeoplehaveworkedtogetherformutualprogress.We’vetradedtogetherformorethan200years.WestoodtogetherintheSecondWorldWar.ChineseimmigrantsandChineseAmericanshavehelpedtobuildAmerica,includingmanywhojoinusheretonight.TheChineseandAmericanpeopleworktogetherandcreatenewopportunitiestogethereverysingleday.Mr.President,todaywe’veshownthatourgovernmentscanworktogetheraswell,forourmutualbenefit.Andthatincludesthisbitofnews-—underanewagreement,ourNationalZoowillcontinuetodazzlechildrenandvisitorswiththebelovedgiantpandas.(Applause.)I'mtoldthatthereisaChineseproverbthatsays:Ifyouwantoneyearofprosperity,thengrowgrain.Ifyouwant10yearsofprosperity,thengrowtrees.Butifyouwant100yearsofprosperity,thenyougrowpeople.AndsoIproposeatoast--toourpeople,thecitizensofthePeople’sRepublicofChinaandtheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Maytheygrowtogetherinfriendship.Maytheyprospertogetherinpeace.Andmaytheyrealizetheirdreamofthefutureforthemselves,fortheirchildren,andfortheirgrandchildren.Ganbei.(Applause.)PRESIDENTHU:(Astranslated.)PresidentObamaandMrs.Obama,distinguishedguests,ladiesandgentlemen,dearfriends,goodevening.IamdelightedtoonceagaincometotheUnitedStatesandpayastatevisitattheinvitationofPresidentObama.Sincesettingfootonthisbeautifulland,wehavereceivedthegracioushospitalityoftheU.S.governmentandpeople.ThiseveningPresidentObamaishostingthiswelcomingdinnerforus,andhasjustmadewarmremarks.Onbehalfofmycolleaguesandinmyownname,IwanttoexpressheartfeltthankstoPresidentandMrs.ObamaandotherAmericanfriendspresenttoday.IalsowishtoconveythroughyouthebestwishesoftheChinesepeopletothefriendlyAmericanpeopleandextendcordialgreetingstopeoplefromvarioussectorsoftheUnitedStateswhohavegivencareandsupporttothegrowthofU.S.-Chinarelations.Thepurposeofmyvisitistoincreasemutualtrust,enhancefriendship,deepencooperationandadvancethepositive,cooperativeandcomprehensiveChina-U.S.relationshipforthe21stcentury.Inrecentyears,particularlyoverthepasttwoyearssincePresidentObamatookoffice,China-U.S.relationshavemadestrongheadway,thankstothejointeffortsofbothsides.Wehaveincreasedexchangesincooperationinawiderangeofareas,maintainedclosecommunicationandcoordinationonmajorinternationalandregionalissues,andplayedapositiveroleinpromotingpeace,stabilityandprosperityintheAsiaPacificregionandthewholeworld.Underthecurrentcircumstances,ourtwocountriessharebroadercommoninterests,showtheirbiggercommonresponsibilities,andfacemoreseverecommonchallengesthanatanytimeinhistory.Asaresult,itismoreimportantthaneverforustomaintainthelong-term,soundandsteadygrowthofourbilateralrelations.Thisistherealityweface,anditshouldberecognizedbybothsides.ThismorningPresidentObamaandIhadanin-depthexchangeofviewsonChina-U.S.relationsandinternationalandregionalissuesofcommoninterest.Andwereachedimportantagreement.Weagreedthatourtwocountriesshouldincreasecontactsatthetopandotherlevels,strengthenstrategicmutualtrustthroughdialogueandcommunication,intensifyexchangesandcooperationinallfields,andstepupcommunicationandcoordinationoninternationalandregionalissues.Weagreedthatthetwocountriesshouldrespecteachother’ssovereignty,territorialintegrityandthedevelopmentinterests,properlyhandledifferencesandfrictions,andworktogethertobuildaChina-U.S.cooperativepartnershipbasedonmutualrespectandmutualbenefit.China-U.S.relationshavetraveledaextraordinaryjourneyinthepast32yearssincetheestablishmentofdiplomaticties.Areviewofthehistoryofourrelationsshowsthatwehavefarmorecommonintereststhandifferences,andcooperationformutualbenefitasalwaysbeingthemainstreamofourrelations.Thishasreinforcedourconfidenceinfurtherpushingforwardourrelationship.TodaybothChinaandtheUnitedStatesareconfrontedwiththearduoustaskofsustainingsteadyeconomicgrowthandachievingeconomictransformation.Andwebothneedtotacklethevariouschallengesbroughtbyeconomicglobalization.Thishasaddedtoourneedanddesiretoenhancecooperation.Weshouldpursueourrelationswithastrongerconviction,abroaderv
