WhenIwasoutforatravelinJejuIsland,whatsurprisedmemostarethoseChinesefeaturesallaroundthisprestigiousscenicspotofKorea.ThemomentIgotoutoftheplane,IwasamusedbythosebrokenChinesewordsprintedonthewalloftheairport.Mostofthosehilariouswordssay“currencyexchange！”or“greatesthotelroomever!”and“Dutyfreeshops”inaprettyfunnyway.IguessChinesepeopleare,like,walkingcashtothem.Anyway,althoughthosewhowrotethemclearlyarenotevenclosetogoodChinesespeakers,theyhadindeedmademytravelphenomenallyconvenientaswellashomelikeatthesametime.ThereisevenawholedistrictcalledJUNGMUN,whichmeans“Chinese”inKorean.ItisoneofthemostbustlingplacesinJeju,astouristsfromChinabasicallyboughtthewholeplaceup.IcouldevenspendRMBinJeju,whichisusuallynotallowedinotherreligiousorcountries.Chinesetouristshaveindeedpromotedtheeconomicsthere,Iguess.AnotherinterestingphenomenonI’dliketotalkaboutistheChinesefeatureinUSTVseries.Asyouallknow,USTVseriesplayaratherimportantpartinChinesestudents’lives.AgentsofSHIELDisawell-knownseriesandIpersonallyloveitverymuch.Whenanagentcameback,half-dead,saying“IhavespentmylastfouryearsinaShanXicoopermine”,Icouldn’thelplaughing.AndIdon’thavetomentiontheChinesefoodSaturdayofSheldoninTheBigbangtheory,themysteriousgirlfriendnamedShadowofOliverQueeninTheArrow,andthosemeaninglessquotingofConfuciusandSunZiincountlessUSTVseries.AmericanwritersseemtoseeChinatownasasacredandexoticplaceinwhichliveinsidiousvillainswhohappentomasterkungfuandhaveseriousAsianfaces.ThesephenomenaabovearejustasmallpartofChinesefeaturesoverseasIhavenoticed.Needlesstosay,theriseofChinahasindeedbecamemoreandmorerelevantandsignificanttotheordinaryChinesepeople.Theremostcertainlyisnotanyothercountryinthisworldthathaschangeditsinternationalstandingatthismagnitude,andtheworldisembracingChinainanunprecedentedway.However,althoughwehaveseentheprogressmadebytheworld,I’mstillhopingthattheycanseethroughthesurfacetoperceivetheessenceofChina.Whatweshouldreallyfocusonareeveryindividualofthe1.3billionordinaryChinese.WeshouldchangetheviewpointandtakeaseriouslookatChina,atChinesepeople,attheirdown-to-earthdreams,attheirimpulsivedrivetochangetheirfate,tochangetheirnation'sfate,andattheirkindheartedtemperaments,attheirdiligentcharacters.Today'sChinaismadeupofChinesepeoplewhohavevirtueandexcellence,notjustofBruceLeeandKungpaochickencubes.Weshouldnotoverlookthisgreatcountry,andwemostcertainlyshouldnotseeonlythehigh-risebuildingsandtheapparentprosperity,butalsolayoursightsonthoseunsungheroeswhohavebeenmakingcontributionstothisverysocietysincethebeginning.
