INTRODUCTIONConnectionsaredefinedasthesystemorassemblyusedtotieaprecastmembertothesupportingstructureortoanadjacentmemberwhilefixingsarethehardwarecomponentofconnections.Inthedesignofconnectionsstructuralredundancyisgenerallyeliminatedtominimiseforces.Therefore,itiscriticallyimportantthatloadpathsforforcesthroughthestructure,fromelementsthroughconnectionsdowntothefootingsandfoundationarecarefullyreviewed.Wherepossibleitisprudenttodesignastaticallydeterminatesystem,whichwillaccommo-datelong-term,incrementalvolume-changemovement.Considerationofconnectionbehaviourduringbotherectionandthelifeofthestructureareimportant.Practicalandeconomicalconnectiondesignmustconsiderthemanufactureoftheelementsandconstructiontechniques,aswellastheperformanceoftheconnec-tionsforbothserviceabilityandultimatelimitstates.Designoftheoverwhelmingmajorityofconnectionsisasimpleeverydayaffairbuttheprinciplessummarisedherearethebasisofallconnectiondesign.GENERALDESIGNCRITERIAConnectionsandfixingsmustmeetthefollowingcriteria.
