MS-DB-41,ChangeL,2003-06-02,Page1CopyrightDaimlerChryslerCorporation1950(2003-02-05)DAIMLERCHRYSLERCORPORATIONNo:MS-DB-41MaterialStandardDatePublished:2003-06-02CategoryCode:S-3Change:LEASLReq.:NoRESTRICTED:NoPLASTICS-THERMOPLASTIC-POLYAMIDE(NYLON)-ALLAUTOMOTIVEGRADES1.0GENERAL1.1PurposeoftheStandardThepurposeofthisstandardistospecifytherequirementsofautomotivegradesofpolyamide(nylon)developedfromvirgin,recycled,reconstituted,and/orregrindresinsources.Thisstandardusestheclassificationsystemandtablesof***ASTMD6779***,andoutlinestheinitialcharacterizationandcertificationrequirementsforthesematerials.1.2PurposeoftheMaterialThesematerialscanbeusedininjectionmolding,extrusion,blowmoldingandotherthermoformingprocesses.Particularmaterialsinthisstandardcanbeusedforinterior,exterior,and/orunder-the-hoodapplications.Thesematerialsaregenerallyresistanttoheat,abrasion,andmostorganicchemicals.Partsmoldedfromthesematerialsarewellsuitedforfunctionalanddecorativeapplications.1.3CoverageofthisStandardThisstandardcoversthephysicalandmechanicalrequirements,testprocedures,andqualitycontrolforpolyamideresins.Thestandardappliestoallgradesofpolyamidecommonlyusedintheautomotiveindustry,ascomprisedin***ASTMD6779***.ThisstandardsupersedesthefollowingDaimlerChryslerMaterialStandards;DB45,DB48,DB416,DB418,DB426,DB427,DB430,DB431,DB432,DB433,DB437,DB441,DB442,DB444,DB446,DB447,DB451,DB453,DB455,DB457,DB465,DB466,DB467,DB470,DB476andMS-DB478.Thisstandardappliestonatural,black,non-matchedcolorand100%color-matchmaterials.Thisdocumentallowsfortheuseofrecycled,reconstituted,andregroundmaterialsprovidedthattherequirementsasstatedinthisdocumentaremetandthematerialisidentifiedassuchonthepartdrawingorwiththeappropriatesuffix.2.0MATERIALCHARACTERISTICSThematerialshallmaintainallthecharacteristicsthatarestatedinthestandardthroughallphasesofprocessing.Manufacturingissuessuchasnicks,tears,cracks,flowmarks,blisters,flash,roughness,porosity,voids,surfacefinishandtextureareprimarilyafunctionoftheprocessandnotthematerial.Otherissuessuchascolor,gloss,warpageandshrinkagecouldbearesultoftheprocessand/orthematerial.Ineithercase,theseconditionsarenotcontrolledbythisstandardandcanonlyberemediedbythefabricators'processcontrolprogram.MS-DB-41,ChangeL,2003-06-02,Page2CopyrightDaimlerChryslerCorporation1950(2003-02-05)3.0CHEMICALCOMPOSITIONThisstandardcoversmanygradesofnylon(polyamide).Theseinclude,butarenotlimitedtonylon6,nylon66,nylon11,nylon12,nylon46,nylon610,nylon612,nylon66/6copolymers,nylon6+66blends,nylon6/propyleneblends,PA6T/66,PA6T/MPMDT,andPAMXD6polyamides.Materialsmaybeunfilled,filled,toughened,plasticized,lubricated,nucleated,stabilized,orflameretardedtoobtainthedesiredproperties.***4.0PERFORMANCEREQUIREMENTSOFTHEMATERIAL4.1MechanicalPropertiesandTestsApprovedmaterialsshallmeettherequirementsasdesignatedin***ASTMD6779***TablePA,TableA,orTableBforthelinecall-outidentifiedintheChryslerPlasticNumber(CPN)indexsystem.Adescriptionofthelinecalloutsystemforcommonandvariablegradescanbefoundin***ASTMD6779***Section4entitledClassification.Therequirementsfoundinthistableapplyonlytonaturalandblackmaterials(seedefinitionsinSection6.0).Seesection4.3ofthisdocumentforcolorcompounds.4.2AdditionalRequirementsThelinecalloutmaybefollowedwithasuffixtoidentifyspecialtytestsrequiredforaspecificmaterial.Thesuffixeswillfollowtheformatof***ASTMD6779***Section5entitledSuffixes.ThesuffixtestandvaluemustbespecifiedontheCPNtowhichthematerialisapproved.ThemainlistofsuffixescanbefoundinTable3ofthisdocument.AnadditionallistofsuffixesisavailableinASTMD4000underClassificationandmaybeusedforadditionalrequirementsasappropriate.4.3RequirementsforColoredMaterialsAnypigmentedmaterial,whethernon-matchedcoloror100%color-matched,mayresultinareductionofpropertiesupto20%fromtheminimumcertifiablevaluesoftheunpigmentedmaterialduetotheadditionofthecoloradditives.(SeethedefinitionslistedinSection6.0forcolorterms).Thepigmentedmaterialcanbecertifiedusingthesamelinecall-outusedforthenaturalorblackproductaslongasitdoesnotexceedthis20%propertyreductionlimitInitialapprovalshallconsistofevaluatingtensileandCharpyimpactpropertiesofeachcolorfromonelotofmaterial.BothtensileandCharpyimpactbarsshallbemoldedandtestedaccordingtothetestmethodspecifiedinTable1ofthisstandard.Reportthepercentpropertylossoftheaveragedvaluecomparedtotheunpigmented(natural)material3sigmaminimumcertificationvalues,toDaimlerChryslerMaterialsEngineeringforapproval.Onthereport,includetherawdata(all5tensileand10Charpydatapointsrecorded)andnoteanydatapointthatexceedsthe20%propertylossallowance.Anypigmentedmaterialwithanaveragedvaluethatexceedsthe20%propertylossallowanceshallbeconsideredarejection.Notethatflowrate(orapparentmeltviscosity),meltingpoint,density,tensilemodulus,deflectiontemperatureandallnon-certifiabletestscanberunontheunpigmentedsamplesandarenotrequiredtobeduplicatedonpigmentedsamples(whetheritbepre-coloredorcoloredatthepress).DeviationstothisrequirementareallowedatthediscretionoftheOrganicMaterialsEngineeringDepartmentif:a)Th
