410A(R-410A)Properties,Uses,Storage,andHandlingIntroductionBackgroundChlorodifluoromethane(R-22orHCFC-22)hasbeenusedasarefrigerantinvariousrefrigeration,indus-trialcooling,airconditioning,andheatingapplica-tionsforoverfivedecades.ThelowozonedepletionpotentialofR-22comparedtoCFC-11(chloro-fluorocarbon11)andCFC-12anditsexcellentrefrigerantpropertieshavehelpedfacilitatethetransitionawayfromCFCs.However,R-22willbephasedoutinthefirstquarterofthe21stcentury.Inpreparationforthisphaseout,DuPontoffersDuPont™Suva®407CandDuPont™Suva®410A,environmentallyacceptablealternativestoR-22.Suva 407CandSuva 410ARefrigerantDescriptionsSuva®407Cisanon-ozone-depletingblendofthreehydrofluorocarbon(HFC)refrigerants.ItexhibitsperformancecharacteristicssimilartoR-22.Suva®410Aisanon-ozone-depletingblendoftwoHFCrefrigerants.Itexhibitshigherpressuresandrefrigera-tioncapacitythanR-22.ThecompositionsofSuva®407CandSuva®410Aareasfollows:HFC-32HFC-125HFC-134aSuva 407C(R-407C),wt%232552Suva 410A(R-410A),wt%5050—BecauseSuva®407CandSuva®410AaremixturesofHFCs,theyhavezeroozonedepletionpotential.Table1liststhechemicalnamesandformulaeofthecomponentsthatmakeupSuva®407CandSuva®410A.Table1ComponentsofDuPont™Suva 410A:HFC-32/HFC-125ComponentChemicalNameFormulaCASNumberMolecularWeightHFC-32DifluoromethaneCF2H275-10-552.0HFC-125PentafluoroethaneCF3CHF2354-33-6120.0HFC-134a1,1,1,2-TetrafluoroethaneCF3CH2F811-97-2102.01TheDuPontOvalLogo,DuPont™,Themiraclesofscience®,andSuva®aretrademarksorregisteredtrademarksofE.I.duPontdeNemoursandCompany.UsesSuva®407CrefrigerantperformssimilarlytoHCFC-22underevaporatortemperaturesrangingfrom–7to10°C(20to50°F).ItisdesignedforuseinnewequipmentandasaservicerefrigerantforexistingHCFC-22airconditioning,heatpumpandmedium-temperaturerefrigerationequipment.Suva®410Aisintendedforuseinnewaircondition-ingapplicationsthathavetraditionallybeenservicedbyHCFC-22.Manyotherapplicationsarealsopossiblesuchasmediumandlowtemperaturerefrig-eration.DuetothesignificantlyhigherpressuresthatSuva®410AexhibitscomparedtoHCFC-22,atypicalcompressordesignedforHCFC-22cannotbeusedwithSuva®410A.Table2showstheoreticalperformanceofSuva®407C,Suva®410A,andHCFC-22.Suva®407CexhibitssimilarperformancetoHCFC-22,whileSuva®410Agivessignificantlyhigherpressuresandrefrigerationcapacity.PhysicalPropertiesGeneralphysicalpropertiesforSuva®407CandSuva®410AareshowninTable3.Thepressure-enthalpydiagramsforSuva®407CareshowninFigures1and2
