BrightStar121151201214141贾乃琛Thissonnet,brightstar,isthemasterpieceofthefamousBritishRomanistpoetJohnKeats(1795-1821),whichshowshisinfatuationtobewithhisloverforeternity.Thispoembrokethroughsomelimitsinsonnetpoems,whichtookanimportantpositioninthepoetryfieldintheshortwritingcareerofKeats.JohnKeatswroteBrightStararound1819,thoughitwasnotpublisheduntil1838afterhisdeath.KeatswrotethislovepoemforhisfiancéeFannyBrawne.Thepoem’smainthemeistheloveandappreciationofthingswhichareunchanging.Thisthemeisbroughtupmanytimesinthepoem.Inthefirsttwolines,Keatsshowsusthathewouldlovetobearoundforeverandfulloflife.“Brightstar,wouldIweresteadfastasthouart”(1).Thebrightstarsymbolizestheeverlastingnatureofaheavenlybody,whichhangsinthesky,lastforeverandunchanging.“Notalonesplendourhungaloftthenight”(2).Thislineexpressthebrightstarisnotaloneinitsbrilliance,butisaccompaniedbyotherstars.Withthisline,Keatsemphasizetheimportanceofcompanionshipandthefearofbeingalone.“Andwatching,witheternallidsapart,Likenature’spatient,sleeplessErmite”(3-4).LinethreeshowsthatifKeatscouldbeabrightstar,hewouldseehisloveendlesslywithoutlosingdesire.Linefourcomparestheearthtothebrightstar.Likethestar,theearthissleeplessand,therefore,fulloflifeandlastingforever.Heimpliestheearth’sabilitytobeunaffectedbytheeventsthatoccuraroundit.Theearthcontinuesitscoursearoundthesolarsystem.Keatsthencontinueshispoem,“Themovingwatersattheirpriestliketask.Ofpureabolutionroundearth’shumanshore’s”(5-6).Thewateractsasacleanertotheearthlikeapriestblesseshischildren.Keatsdesirestohavethisqualityinordertoearntheadvantageofrevitalizinghimself.“No---yetstillstedfast,stillunchangeable,Pilloweduponmyfairlove'sripeningbreast”(line9—10),Keatsnowshowsushisrealpurposeofthepoembydescribinghisemotionaljourneytobewithhislovereternallyandwithoutchange.Hisdeepemotionsappearinline10thathewanttobeascloseaspossibletohislove.“Tofeelforeveritssoftfallandswell,Awakeforeverinasweetunrest”(line11—12),Keatsexplainsthathehasyetanotherdesire,inwhichhisloverbealiveforeternity.Theinterpretationofsoftfallandswellcouldonlyshowthepreciousbreathstakenbyhislovereverydayofhereternallife.Keatsdescribesbeingwithherinawakefulstateforeverwithoutthetroublingeffectsofmortality.“Still,stilltohearhertender-takenbreath,Andsoliveever---orelseswoontodeath.”(Line13—14)Keatsconcludeshispoembydisplayingapowerfulstatementthatifhecannothearhisloverbreathe,hewoulddiewith.noregrets.Keatsshowsthataslongashecanbewithhislover,hewillliveforever.ThisisKeats’sfeelingstowardslifethatdeathbringsnofearandlifemeansnothingwithouthislover.Moreover,herealizesthatHumanscannotbeimmortalandloveisanessentialpartofbeinghuman.Keatsdiedattheageof25,hedidn'thaveagoodhealth,sohehopehecanlivetogetherwithhislover,butit'simpossible.Sowhenwereadthepoem,wecanfeelthepoet'ssorrowandthebelievethatlovecanprevailtimeandmatter.
