哈佛大学幸福课第八课中英文讲义在上节课结束之前Iendedlasttimeby我跟大家分享了我生平的一些事sharingsomebiographicaldetailsaboutmylife.后来有人问我是真的吗?Somepeopleaskedmeafter,aretheyreallytrue?没错是千真万确的Soyes,theyareabsolutelytrue.这个故事我是从两个不同的角度来讲的AndItoldtheincidentfromtwodifferentperspectives—第一个是消极者的第二个是积极者的firstasafaultfinder,andthenasameritfinder.大家要记住的很重要的一点是Nowtheimportantthingtokeepinmind我们所说的积极者并非whenwethinkaboutthemeritfinderisthatit'snotthat不会感到痛苦或失望themeritfinderdoesnotexperiencepainordisappointment,愤怒或羞辱恐惧或失望oranger,orhumility,orfear,ordisappointment.至少无法追求自己的目标It'sverydisappointingtosaytheleast,是一件很让人失望的事nottobeabletopursueone'sgoal,如果这个目标碰巧是关于职业生涯的ifthegoalhappenstobeaprofessionalcareerinsquash.或者是如果自己是唯一一个Itisveryhumiliatingtobetheonlyperson没有拿到学位的人whofailsofaprogramandtohavetowalkaround而不得不在WillamJames大楼再呆一年forawholeyearinWilliamJameswhile就像脑袋长了一个角那么羞愧feelinglikeyouhaveahorncomingoutofhead.这种事没有快乐可言非常痛苦It'snotfun.It'spainful.但是积极者...对不起However,thedifferencebetweenameritfinder,sorry,积极者和消极者的区别在于abenefitfinderandafaultfinderisthat,积极者明白thebenefitfinderunderstandsthat这世界是不会事事如愿的whilethingsdon'tnecessarilyhappenforthebest,但我们可以扭转坏事itispossibletomakethebestofthingsthathappen.事情会好转的一切会变顺利的ThingswillbeOK.Thingswillturnoutfine.可能需要点时间Itmaytakeawhile.可能要过一段时间才能看到曙光UntilIseethebenefitofit,itmaytakeawhileandIwill可能要过一段时间才能忘了羞辱痛苦失望getoverthehumiliationorthepainorthedisappointment.但一切不好的事都会过去Butthat,too,shallpass.也就是说积极者明白Inotherwords,Thebenefitfinderunderstandsthat这些感觉是暂时的他会允许自己thesefeelingsaretemporary,giveshimorherselfthepermission有人之常情他会明白tobehumanandthenunderstands事情最后会好转的thingswillturnoutfineattheend.我明白这点发生的都发生了这就是人生Iknowthat.Beenthere.Donethat.Partoflife.允许自己有人之常情包括允许自己Permissiontobehuman,whichincludespermission感受这些负面情绪允许自己失败toexperiencetheseemotionsandalsothepermissiontofail.我们稍后会深入讲允许自己失败We'lltalkalotaboutthispermissiontofail等我们讲到完美主义时whenwetalkaboutperfectionism.因为完美主义对失败有强烈的情绪Becauseperfectionismisrealintenseforyourfailure如果做不到最好的那就是最差的orwefeelit'sallornothing.如果你不是完美无瑕那你就是一无是处Eitherwehaveacompleteflawlessrecord,orit'suseless.要么就是非凡要么就是平庸没有中间地带It'seitherphenomenal,orcatastrophe.Allornothing.积极者明白Thebenefitfinderunderstandsthatnature,人的本性决定了thehumannaturedictatesthat我们会有痛苦的情绪人的本性wehavepainfulemotionsandhumannature,或者说是人就会有失败的时候但失败会过去的orbeinghumandictateswealsofail.Andthat,too,shallpass.做积极者有很多好处Therearemanybenefitstobeabenefitfinder.第一个好处就是幸福感多了Sothefirstbenefitiswesimplyfeelbetter.积极者感到更多幸福还有其他好处Wearehappierforit.Buttherearemanymanyothers.例如Forexample,波莫纳大学的SuzanneThompson做了以下的研究SuzanneThompsonfromPomonaUniversitydidfollowingresearch.她找那些在加州大火中Shewenttopeoplewhohadjustlosttheirhomes失去家园的灾民inafireinCalifornia.那时候很多灾民...那是一场很大的山火Thereweremanyofthematthetime-itwasalargewildfire.很多人去失去了家园Andmanypeoplelosttheirhomes火灾过去她去采访他们andsheinterviewedthemafterthat.她把积极者和消极者区分开来Andshedistinguishedwhowerebenefitfindersandfaultfinders:积极者并没有说我很高兴火灾发生了thebenefitfindersdidn'tsayI'msogladithappened,而是说这场天灾也有好的一面buttheysaidwelltherearesomepositivehere-我可以重新开始火灾给了我一个新起点Icanstartanew;it'safreshstart;现在我更喜欢我的家我的家人都安全无事andnowI'llappreciatemyhomemore;myfamilyisOK;这让我很欣慰这是好事andI'mrelievedandthat'sgood.所以积极者看到的是好的一面Sotheyfocusedonthepositive.随后她跟进这些受访者Whenshefollowedupwiththeseindividuals,那些跟消极者区分开来的积极者thosewhowerebenefitfindersasopposedtofaultfinders长远来说他们感到更幸福werehappierinthelongterm,wereableto,他们有更多积极情绪wereexperiencingmorepositivemoods,andlesslikely焦虑的情绪更少身体也少患病tobeanxiousandhadlessphysicalsymptoms.所以对身心都有好处Bothpsychologicalaswellasphysicalconsequences.有很多研究针对积极心态对身体的影响例如Numerous,alotofresearchonhealthbenefits-forexample,GlennAffleck找一些人做过一个研究GlennAffleckdidresearchwithindividuals这些人有过心脏病发whohadaheartattack.有些人把病发看成大灾难Andthereweresomeindividualswhosawitasthecatastrophe,世界末日theendoftheworld.另外一些人当然不会为病发感到高兴Therewereotherswhowerecertainlynothappyaboutit,但他们会说这是一个警钟butsaidOK,sothisisawake-upcall.心脏病发也有好的一面It'sactuallysomepositivehere,因为它告诉我要好好照顾自己的身体becauseitistellingmeIneedtotakecareofmyselfbetter.或者病发让他们对自己的价值观有所改观Orithelpedthemrevisetheirpersonalvalues.看到积极的一面的人Thoseindividualswhosawthepositive,thebenefit,把心脏病发视为一个警钟的人whoareabletoseethewake-upcallthere再活八年的几率更高weremorelikelytosurvive8yearslater;而且再次心脏病发的几率也更低lesslikelytohaveasecondheartattack.这听起来很显然而见Nowthatsoundsprettyobvious,因为他们会改变生活方法becauseyouknowtheychangetheirlifestyle.但原因不只是改变了生活方式Butit'snotjustaboutchanginglifestyle.我上次介绍的UCLA大学的JulienneBowerJulienneBowerwetalkedaboutlasttimefromUCLA他研究过一些艾滋病患者找出其中的积极者lookedatAIDSpatientandidentifiedthebenefitfindersthere-不是那些说太好了我有艾滋病的人notthepeoplewhosaidI'msogladthatIhaveAIDS,而是那些说因为患了这个病butratherthepeoplewhosaidasaresultofthat,现在我更懂得感激一些事Iamabletoappreciatecertainthingsmore;因为患了这个病asaresultofthat,我更关心那些真正重要的事Ifocusmoreonthethingsthatreallymatter;因为这个病我和一些人更亲近了asaresult,Iamgettingclosertocertainpeople.四到九年后她跟进这个研究Thebenefitfinders,whenshefollowedup4to9yearslater,她发现积极者的存活的几率更高thebenefitfindersweremorelikelytosurvive,活下来的可能性更高weremorelikelytobealive.LauraKing和Minor做的研究表明ResearchbyLauraKingandMinor:whattheyshowed我们可以把人培养成积极者wasthatitcanalsobeusedasanintervention.所以除了那些天
