哈佛大学幸福课第十五课中英文讲义大家好上节课我们学到了休整Student:Hello.Lastlecturewelearnedaboutrecovery.时不时地放下工作放松一下自己Attime,awayfromworkreallyrelax.我想邀请你们参加一项传统并且I'dliketoinviteyoutojoinatraditional有历史渊源的休整节日犹太安息日andtime-testedrecoveryperiod,Shiva,theJewishsabbath.这周五的晚上ThisFridaynight,哈佛的HowardHill和Hervat将邀请大家HowardHillandHervatatHarvardinviteyouandyourfriends来Mac中心享用犹太安息日大餐toShivadinnerattheMacforShiva1000.欢迎来到Mac中心的露天平台ComeforfreedinneratthedeckdownMac和你的朋友们一起享用免费大餐withallofyourfriends,我们的TalBen-Shahar教授将会发表讲话whereourveryownprofessorTalBen-Shaharwillbespeaking.中心将于六点半开门晚餐七点开始Doorsareopenat630,anddinnerstartsat7.如果想参加请迅速在Shiva1000.org上回复PleaseRSVPforthisreallyfuneventatShiva1000.org.所有人都欢迎前来Everyoneisinvited,sopleasesignup.大家好Dr.TalBen-Shahar:Hi,goodmorning.我还被要求替女子垒球队通知大家IwasalsoaskedtoannounceonbehalfoftheWomenSoftballteam她们原本是要来这里通知大家的Theywould'vebeenhereandtheywould'veannouncedthemselves,但是她们现在正在进行比赛一场被推迟了的比赛buttheyareatthegameandthatwasdelayed.这周六和周日都有比赛There'sagamethisSundayand...Saturday.SaturdayandSunday.还有男子棒球队Andalsoforthemen'sbaseballteam.所以请去为他们欢呼还有一个通知Socomeoutandcheer.Andonemoreannouncement.他们听不见抱歉好的Theycan'thear.Sorry.Yeah.Yeah.好的就是5月21号九点十五分开始决赛Allright.SoMay21,9:15-dayforthefinal.希望你们能过去看看Umhopeyoucanmakeit.是周一好的OK.It'saMonday.Allright.每年只要我一要讲完美主义的课SoeveryyearwhenIteachtheperfectionismlecture,就有点坏事要发生somethinghappens.第一年Sothefirstyear,我记得我是把电脑忘在了家里IrememberIactuallyforgotmycomputerathome.第二年投影仪又坏了Secondtime,theprojectordidn'twork.而这一年我忘了带电源线了AndthisyearIforgotmypower,把电源线忘在了家里mypowerforthecomputerathome.所以希望这点电能支持一个学期Sohopefullyitwilllasttheentiresemester.如果不行的话我们就只能面对不完美了Ifnotwe'lljusthavetodealwiththeimperfectscenario,但是其实也没关系的butthat'sOK.这肯定是潜意识里的问题Ithinkitmustbesomethingsubconscious.因为这也太巧合了Becauseit'stoomuchofacoincidence每次都有这些事情发生thateverytimesomethinghappens.的确是这样Walkthetalk.39那么上次我们讲到哪了Sowherewerewelasttime?上次我们讲到你们是怎么学会走路的Lasttimewetalkedabouthowyoulearnedhowtowalk.我们讲到你们是怎么学会画圆圈的Welearnedabouthowyoulearnedtodrawcircles.都是通过不断地失败如爱迪生所说Andallthroughfailure.AsThomasEdisonsaid,我通过不断失败以至成功Ilearnedmyway...Ifailedmywaytosuccess.我们从那些最顶尖的运动员身上看到Andwesawitwithtopathletes,不管是BabeRuth还是乔丹whetheritwasBabeRuthorMichaelJordan.我们也从最顶尖的生意人身上看到Wesawitwithtopbusinesspeople,不管是IBM创始人ThomasWatson还是whetheritwasThomasWatson,IBMorAnitaRoddick,AnitaRoddick美体小铺的创始人founderofthe,ofBodyShop.我们从艺术家和科学家身上看到Weseeitwithartistandscientist-最成功的人也是失败最多的人themostsuccessfulonesarealsotheoneswhofailedthemost,而他们就是那些andthesearetheones深刻明白失败的价值与重要性的人whounderstandthevalueandtheimportanceoffailure.我向你们保证他们没人喜欢失败Iguaranteeyouthennoneofthemenjoyfailing.失败让人受伤让人极度失望Failinghurts;it'sdisappointingatbest;让人沮丧也经常使人尴尬it'sfrustrating;it'sembarrassingoften.但是那些最为成功的人都会However,peoplewhoultimatelysucceedrecognize认识到失败和从失败中学习的价值thatvalueoffailureandlearningfromit.有一本非常好的书There'sawonderfulbook是由我的一位导师最近完成的thatcameoutrecentlybyoneofmymentors-他在商学院教了几年书hetaughtatthebusinessschoolforafewyears;他是一名在heisaprofessor南加州大学任职的教授WarrenBennisatUniversityofSouthernCalifornia-WarrenBennis.WarrenBennis写了一本书AndWarrenBenniswroteabook,名叫做《极客与怪杰》whichiscalledGeeksandGeezers.在这本书里Andinthebook,66他将非常年轻的顶多30岁出头的hecomparedverysuccessfulleaderswhowereyoung,年轻成功人士和老一代的early30sandoldergenerationleaders,真正有所成就的划时代领袖人物peoplewhohavereallymadeit,他们多在七十岁八十岁甚至九十岁以上bigtimeleaderswhoarenowintheir70sand80s,sometimes90s.他将两组人进行了对比Andhecomparedthesetwogroups:极客指那些年轻的怪杰指年长的thegeeks-theyoungones;thegeezers,theolderones.And而他发现有一些whathefoundwasthattherewereanumberofveryinteresting非常有趣同时也很有意义的差异andmeaningfuldifferencesbetweenthegenerations存在于年轻的二十多到三十出头的成功人士ofagainhighlysuccessfullate20sorearly30yearsold和年长的成功领袖人物之间andhighlysuccessfulolderindividuals.其中最明显的差异就是Oneofthemostnotabledifferenceswasthatwork...工作与生活的平衡worklifebalance,这对于年轻的成功人士来说非常重要whichisveryimportantforthelate20s,early30s.非常重要他们自己也经常谈论这个Veryimportant-theytalkedaboutitconstantly,但是对于年老一代的成功人士那里whereasforthe708090yearolds,这几乎完全就是一个外来观念itwasalmostaforeignconcept.这是什么意思啊为什么会这样呢Whatdoesthatevenmean?Why?因为他们总是处在工作中Becausetheywereatworkusually24/7.在那个样本中所有人都是男性Alloftheminthatsampleweremen.而女性则待在家里负责生活的部分Andthewomenwereathome,takingcareofthelifepart.所以说他们的工作与生活的平衡是Sotherewasaworklifebalance-wheretheyweredoingthework,丈夫负责工作妻子负责照顾生活thewivesweredoingthelife.在年轻成功人士的样本里男女都有Whereastheyoungergeneration,menandwomeninthatsample那他们自然会谈论到工作与生活的平衡andtalkingabouttheworklifebalance.两代人之间还有其它的不同Thereareafewotherdifferencesaswell,但是也有一个相同点butthereisonesimilarity,这一点对于两代人来说都是一样的onethingthatwascommontobothgroups.那就是有至少一次Andthatwasatleastone,一般来说要多于一次的显著的失败usuallymorethanonesignificantfailure,WarrenBennis称其为考验一次灾难whatWarrenBenniscametocallacrucible,arealcrisis无论是重要的竞争失败或者失去了工作whetheritwasameaningfullossorlosingajobbeingfired,还是受到了屈辱失去了亲人one'sidentitybeinginsulted,lossofaperson.一些严重的考验一次失败的经历Somerealseriouscrucible,afailure.这是两代人都共同拥有的Thatwascommontobothgroups,他们都将失败看做一个关键点andbothgroupsthoughtthatfailureasapivotalpoint,一个生活的转折点asaturningpointintheirlives.一些帮助造就今天的他们的因素Somethingthathelpedthembecomewhotheyaretoday.再说一遍我不是说已经发生的是好事Again,notsayingithappenedforthebest
