erentorganizations.Takingthisonestepfurther,theperformanceoftheseorganizationsisofcentralimportance;ifbadorincorrectdecisionsaremademostofthetime,theorganizationwillfail,whereasmakingamajorityofgoodorcorrectdecisionsleadstothesuccessoftheorganization.Italsobecomesobviousthattherearemanyinternalandexternalfactorsorstressorsthatcancausetheperformanceofanorganizationtodeteriorate.Thus,organizationalperformanceis,ingeneral,notconstant.Trainingmaymitigatethee ectofsuchstressors.Trainingproceduresareofspecialinteresttoorganizationswhereperformanceismorecriticalthaninotherorganizations.Thetargetedorganizationsarethosewhichareinvolvedincertaindangerousorcriticallyimportanttasks;forexample,itiseasytoseethatmoreisatstakewhendesigningatrainingprocedureforanagentwhoisguidingairplanesfromacontroltowerismorethanonewhoisseparatingballsbycoloratatoymanufacturingplant.Assuch,therehasbeenmuchresearchintoidentifyingdi erenttrainingproceduresandthee ectsoftraininginimprovingperformance.Asigni cantincreaseinrecentresearchinthisareahasbeenadirectresultofaninstanceoftheidentify-friend-or-foetaskwheretheincorrectidenti cationofanaircraftresultedinthedirectlossofmorethan200civilianlives{theJuly3,1988tragicshootingofanIranianpassengerplaneoverthePersianGulfbytheU.S.S.Vincennes.Atrainingprocedureisaprocessusedtogiveanagentabasisfromwhichtomakedecisions.Twodi erenttrainingprocessesthathavebeenexaminedwithintheorganizationalcontextareexperientialtraining,wheretheagentsaretrainedsuchthattheircurrentdecisionsareafunctionofcertainaspectsoftheirpastthatarelabeledexperience,andoperationaltraining,wheretheagentsuseastandardoperatingprocedure(SOP)toevaluatethesituationandmakeadecision[Car91,LC91].Muchresearchhasbeendoneonorganizationalperformancewhentheagentsintheorganizationhavebeenexperientiallytrainedsuchthattheircurrentdecisionsar
