ThePedestrianisasciencestoryhappenedin2052.IttalksaboutMr.LeonardMead,whoalwayswalksoutforhoursatnight,isarrestedbyarobotpolicemansuddenlywithanunreasonableaccusation:disturbthesocietystability.Fromthestory,thewriterdeliversawarningthattechnologicaldevelopmentcannotbeplacedabovehumanity.Humanityisthemostimportantelementinoursociety,thesocietywillbecomepurgatoryiftechnologyplaceshumanity.Herearethreeexamplesinthestory.Thefirstexampleisthedescriptionofsurroundingsandpeopleinthestory,heshowsusanon-humanityenvironment.DuringMr.Leonardwalking,hedescribesthecityisamistysilenceandtheearthhestandsonisabucklingconcretewhichmeansnooneuseitanymore,bothtwoimplythereisnovigorinthecityatnight.Healsoseesthenightwalkingaswalkthroughagraveyard,thestreetatnightisonlydryriverbeds.Besides,hetakesthepeopleinhouselikedeadpeoplesittinginthetomb-likehouses.Attheendofstory,writerusesthree“empty”asparallelismtoemphasizethesituationofsociety——acold,emptyandsoul-lesssociety.ThesecondexampleshownintheconversationbetweentheroboticpoliceandMr.Leonard.Whenthepolicefirstshowup,car’slightisabeamoffiercecone.Whenthecity’sonlyonepolicespeaktoMr.Leonard,itsvoiceismetallicandwithoutanymotion.WhenMr.Leonardanswerspolice’squestionthatwhyhewalksoutsideatnight,thepoliceevencannotunderstandthemeaningofwalkingforairandwalkingtosee.What’smore,theroboticpoliceevenwanttosentMr.LeonardtoPsychologicalCenterjustbecausehewalksoutatnight.WhenMr.Leonardisputintothecar,writeruseslotsofadjectivestodescribetheterriblesituationinthecar,hedescribesthecarsasalittleblackjailwithbars,itsmellslikeassteelandharshbleach.Thisridiculousconversationandstrangecarcanshowthehumanityhasbeenputlowerthanthetechnology,buthowcanasocietydevelopwithouthumanity?ThelastexampleisMr.Leonardhimself,heisawarmimage.Heisanexceptionfromthenon-humanitysociety,peoplecanseethewarmthofhumanity.Forexample,heloveswalkingoutsidetobreaththefreshairandseetheworld,heridiculeshislungblazinglikeaChristmastree,heevenchatwiththetomb-likehouseliketalktoarealperson.Whenhepasseshishouse,itistheoneparticularhousewithaloudyellowillumination.EverythingaboutMr.Leonardshowsthescarcehumanity.Fromthethreeexamples,peoplecaneasilynoticeMr.Leonardistheonlypersonwithhumanity,everythinginthatsocietyiscoldandsoul-less,itisstrangeandunbearable.Thewriterwantstowarnpeopleshouldnotdeveloptechnologyblindly,peopleshouldtakehumanityintoconsideration.Thisworldshouldbeawarmoneandbefilledwithhumanity.
