MarieCurie•MadamCuriewasborninPolandonNovember7,1867.In1891shewenttostudyinParisUniversitybecauseatthattimewomenwerenotadmittedtouniversitiesinPoland.WhenshewasstudyinginParis,shelivedapoorlife,butsheworkedveryhard.In1895shemarriedPierreCurie,andthentheyworkedtogetherontheresearchintoradioactivematter.Theydiscoveredtwokindsofradioactivematter----poloniumandradium.•In1904sheandherhusbandweregiventheNobelPrizeforphysics.•In1906Pierredied,butMariewentonworking.•ShereceivedthesecondNobelPrizeforChemistryin1911.SoshebecamethefirstscientistintheworldtowintwoNobelPrizes.DuringWorldWarI,shepushedfortheuseofmobileradiography(X光照相术)unitsforthetreatmentofwoundedsoldiers.Theseunitswerepoweredusingtubes(真空管)ofradiumemanation,acolorless,radioactivegasgivenoffbyradium,latertobeidentifiedasradon(氡).Promptlyafterthewarstarted,shecashedinherandherhusband'sgoldNobelPrizeMedalsforthewareffort.OnJuly4,1934,MarieCuriediedinParis,killedbyleukemia.Shediedofradiationpoisoningandmayhavebeenthefirstpersontodoso.Theworkshedid,shedidwithpatience,oftengettingresultsonlyafteryearsofcarefulexperimentation.
