98TM30-2013AATCCTechnicalManual/2014Developedin1946byAATCCCommit-teeRA31;revised1952,1957,1971,1981,1987,1988(withtitlechange),1993,1999;reaffirmed1970,1974,1979,1989,1998,2013;editoriallyre-visedandreaffirmed1986,2004;edito-riallyrevised2010.1.GeneralPurposeandScope1.1Thetwopurposesofthistestmethodaretodeterminethesusceptibil-ityoftextilematerialstomildewandrotandtoevaluatetheefficacyoffungicidesontextilematerials.2.Principle2.1TestsI,II,IIIandIVcanbeused,singlyorincombination,dependingonthetypeofexposuretowhichthetextilematerialwillbesubjected.Forexample,ifthefinalproductwillcomeincontactwithsoil,TestI,whichsimulatesthisex-posure,shouldbeused;ifthefinishedproductwillnevercomeincontactwithsoilortropicalconditions,amuchlessseveretest(e.g.,IIorIII)shouldbeused.TestIIisspecificallydesignedforcellu-lose-containingmaterialswhileTestIIIisforallothers.Forallmaterialsintendedforoutdoorandabovegrounduse,TestIVshouldbeused.Thetwoimportantconsiderationswhenevaluatingtextilematerialsinrelationtofungalgrowthare(1)theactualdeteriorationofthetextileproduct(rot),and(2)growthnotneces-sarilydeterioratingtheproductbutmak-ingitunsightly(mildewy)oftenwithanunpleasantandmustyodor.2.2Certainpre-exposuresoftextileproductsmaybeindicatedwhenspecificend-usesarecritical(seeAppendixA).Whentheend-usewillbenearhightem-peratureandthefungicidemaybevola-tile,apreliminaryovenexposuremaybedesired.Whentheend-usewillbeintropicalexposuresoroutsidewithrainfallpresent,aleachingexposureshouldbeperformedbeforemildewevaluationismade.Whenatallpossible,thetextilematerialshouldbeexposedtotheex-pectedconditionsofusepriortoperform-ingthistest.3.Terminology3.1mildewresistance,n.—intextiles,resistancetodevelopmentofunsightlyfungalgrowthsandaccompanyingun-pleasant,mustyodorsontextilematerialsexposedtoconditionsfavoringsuchgrowths.3.2rotresistance,n.—intextiles,re-sistancetodeteriorationofatextilemate-rialasaresultoffungalgrowthinoronit.NOTE:Suchdeteriorationisnormallyassessedbymeasuringlossintensilestrength.4.SafetyPrecautionsNOTE:Thesesafetyprecautionsareforinformationpurposesonly.Thepre-cautionsareancillarytothetestingproce-duresandarenotintendedtobeallinclu-sive.Itistheuser’sresponsibilitytousesafeandpropertechniquesinhandlingmaterialsinthistestmethod.Manufac-turersMUSTbeconsultedforspecificdetailssuchasmaterialsafetydatasheetsandothermanufacturer’srecommenda-tions.AllOSHAstandardsandrulesmustalsobeconsultedandfollowed.4.1Thistestshouldbeperformedonlybytrainedpersonnel.TheU.S.Depart-mentofHealthandHumanServicespub-licationBiosafetyinMicrobiologicalandBiomedicalLaboratoriesshouldbecon-sulted(see24.1).4.2CAUTION:Someofthefungiusedinthesetestsareallergenicandpatho-genic;i.e.,capableofinfectinghumansandproducingdisease.Therefore,everynecessaryandreasonableprecautionmustbetakentoeliminatethisrisktothelaboratorypersonnelandtopersonnelintheassociatedenvironment.Wearprotec-tiveclothing,respiratoryprotection,andimperviousgloveswhenworkingwiththeorganisms.NOTE:Chooserespira-toryprotectionthatpreventspenetrationbythespores.4.3Goodlaboratorypracticesshouldbefollowed.Wearsafetyglassesinalllaboratoryareas.4.4Allchemicalsshouldbehandledwithcare.4.5Aneyewash/safetyshowershouldbelocatednearbyforemergencyuse.4.6Sterilizeallcontaminatedsamplesandtestmaterialspriortodisposal.4.7Exposuretochemicalsusedinthisproceduremustbecontrolledatorbelowlevelssetbygovernmentauthorities(e.g.,OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration’s[OSHA]permissibleex-posurelimits[PEL]asfoundin29CFR1910.1000;seewebsite:).Inaddition,theAmeri-canConferenceofGovernmentalIndus-trialHygienists(ACGIH)ThresholdLimitValues(TLVs)comprisedoftimeweightedaverages(TLV-TWA),shorttermexposurelimits(TLV-STEL)andceilinglimits(TLV-C)arerecommendedasageneralguideforaircontaminantex-posurewhichshouldbemet(see24.2).TestISoilBurial5.Scope5.1Thisprocedureisgenerallyconsid-eredtobethemostseveretestfortextileproducts.Onlythosespecimensthatwillcomeindirectcontactwithsoil—suchassandbags,tarpaulins,tents—needtobetestedbythisprocedure.Itcanalsobeusedfortestingexperimentaltextilefungicides.6.TestSpecimens6.1Preparethefabricspecimenswithdimensions15.0±1.0×4.0±0.5cm(6.0±0.4×1.5±0.2in.)withthelongdimen-sionparalleltothewarpandunravelingto2.5±0.1cmwidth(1.0±0.04in.),or,inthecaseoffabricwithlessthan20threadsper2.5cm(1.0in.)toapredeter-minednumberofthreadstogiveaspeci-men2.5±1.0cminwidth(1.0±0.4in.).Asamplecuttercanalsobeused(see24.3).Thenumberofspecimenswillvaryaccordingtothenumberofvariables.Thesuggestednumberofspecimensisfiveforeachtreatment,controlandreferencefabric.7.TestProcedure7.1Viabilitycontrol:Exposeuntreatedcottoncloth271g/m2(8oz/yd2)inthesoilbedforsevendaysduringthetestpe-riodtoverifyfungalactivity.Thesoilbedshallbeconsideredassatisfactoryiftheviabilitycontrolfabricloses90%break-ingstrengthaftersevendaysexposure.7.2SoilBed:Placetheair-drytestsoil(see24.4)intrays,boxesorsuitablecon-tainerstoadepthof13.0±1.0cm(5.1±0.4in.)andbringtooptimummoisturecontentbygradualadditionofwaterac-companiedbymixingtoav
