——AfterreadingtheGreatGatsbyTheGreatGatsbywaswrittenbyF.ScottFitzgerald,whowasoneofthemostimportantrepresentativesofthe“JazzAge”,inAmericanhistory,maybeit“wasthebestoftimes,itwastheworstoftimes,wehadeverythingbeforeus,wehadnothingbeforeus,wewereallgoingdirecttoHeaven,wewereallgoingdirecttheotherway”.Asthetitlesays:thegreatGatsby,butwhyisGatsbygreat?Inmypointofview,therearetworeasons:Firstly,Gatsbywasborninaverypoorfamily,buthegetalotofwealthrelyonhisownefforts,whichisdifferentfromDaisy’shusband,Tom,whowasborninarichhighclassanddon’tneedtoworryaboutearningmoney.ThesecondoneisthatwhenGatsbydecidetoearnalotofmoney,thereasonwassimple.HejustwanttogetDaisy’sloveagain.ThemainreasonwhyDaisymarryTombutnotGatsbyisthatGatsbywasjustapooryoungmanwhichdidn’tsuitsDaisy’sstatue.Later,thebighouserightoppositeDaisy’s,thosebigparties,theyareallbemadetoattractDaisy’sattention.Sojustforlove,thissimplereason,Gatsbychangedintoanupperclass’srichpeople.Theauthorspendalotoftimetodescribethewealthyandextravagantlifeofthosepeople.Irrespectiveofwhichclasstheybelongto,allofthemworshipsmoney,theyalsobelievethatmoneywillmakelifebetter.DaisyandTombelongstothehighclass,moneycompletelyassimilatedoftheupstartbutextremeexclusionanddespised.Gatsbydon'tunderstandthistruth,hisinflexiblepursuitofwealth,thinksthathecanregaintheidealembodimentofDaisy,evenifhegotthematerialmet,hestillcannotescapespirituallonelinessandsorrow.Gatsby'sdreamistypicaloftheAmericanDream.HisstrugglereflectstheAmericansrespectoftough,independent,andupwardspirit.HisfailuredeclaredthepostwarAmericanspiritofdecadenceanddecline.Materialcivilizationheightprosperitybringpeople'sheartsdesertedanddistortion,thehiddenappearanceenjoycarnivalhugespiritualemptinessandconfusion,painofthewholesocialspiritualloss,butnowayout.
