Isasoundsocialenvironmentnecessaryforpeopletobegoodtoothers?Recently,asurveybyChinaYouthDailyshowsthat76.1percentofrespondentsreckonthatoursocietyprovidesa“badenvironment”forgoodpeopledoinggoodthings.Thus,somepeoplethinkthatasoundsocialenvironmentisnecessaryforpeopletobegoodtoothers;whileotherpeoplearguethatasoundsocialenvironmentisunnecessaryforpeopledoinggoodthings.PersonallyIsupporttheviewthatasoundsocialenvironmentisnotnecessarytobegoodtoothersforthefollowingreasons.Tobeginwith,helpingothersisatraditionalvirtueinChina,everyoneinsocietyissupposedtohelpothers,soastoinheritanddevelopthisChinesetraditionalvirtue.Althoughsomepeoplesaythatourcurrentsocietyprovidesa“badenvironment”forgoodpeopledoinggoodthings,itdoesn’tmeanwehavetostopdoinggoodtoothers.Tosomeextent,theso-called“badenvironment”isdistortedbynewspapersandmedia,whattheyreportedisnotobjectivecompletely,butsomepeopleareeasilyaffected.Ifeveryonewaswillingtohelpothers,doyouthinkasoundsocialenvironmentisnecessaryforpeopletobegoodtoothers?Moreover,thesocietyiscomposedofindividuals,itisindividual’sbehaviorthatcultivatesthesocialmorality.Thatistosay,eachindividualshouldtryhisorherbesttodogoodthingsandbenicetoothers,insteadofwaitingforthesocialenvironmenttoimprove.Wecan’tchangethesocialenvironmentbutwecanimprovethesocialmoralstandardsinitiatively.Therefore,asoundsocialenvironmentwillbeformedgradually.Inanutshell,weindividualsshouldtakeactiveactionstocreateaharmonioussociety,ratherthanwaitforittoimprovepassively.Justasthewell-known“ButterflyEffect”,individualeffortwilleventuallyleadtogreatchangesofthewholesociety.Inaddition,Ibelievethereisnodoubtthateveryoneiseagertohopeothers’helpwhenheorshegetsintroubles.Similarly,justasaproverbgoes,“Presentarosetoothers,anditsfragranceremainsyourhands”,helpingothersisdoinggoodtoourselves,otherswillappreciateyourhelp,andyouwillfeelproudasyougiveothersahand.Wecannotdenythattheremayexistsomebadeffectsinsocialenvironment,butitcannotbetheexcusethatwedonotneedtobegoodtoothers.Fromwhathasbeendiscussedabove,wemaysafelydrawaconclusionthatwhateverthesocialenvironmentis,weareresponsibletobegoodtoothers,andwehavebutonechoicethatwesparenoeffortinmoralcultivationinordertocreateaharmonioussocialcontext.Thus,Istillbelieveasoundsocialenvironmentisunnecessaryforpeopletobegoodtoothersforthesimplereasonthatpeoplewillhelpothersinitiatively.
