INTRODUCTION5GNETWORK:CHALLENGESANDOPPORTUNITIES5GNETWORKARCHITECTUREDESIGNTYPICAL5GNETWORKCAPABILITIESSTANDARDIZATIONSUGGESTIONCONCLUSIONSMAINCONTRIBUTORSIMT-2020(5G)PromotionGroupwasjointlyestablishedinFebruary2013bythreeministriesofChina(includingMIIT,NDRC,andMOST)basedontheoriginalIMT-AdvancedPromotionGroup.Themembersincludethemainoperators,vendors,universities,andresearchinstitutesinChina.ThePromotionGroupisthemajorplatformtopromote5GtechnologyresearchinChinaandtofacilitateinternationalcommunicationandcooperation.IMT-2020(5G)PromotionGroup5GNetworkArchitectureDesignWhitePaperP1P2P5P10P19P21P22CONTENTS1IMT-2020(5G)PromotionGroup5GNetworkArchitectureDesignWhitePaperAlongwiththeresearchon5Ggettingfurtherandmoredetailed,theindustrialshaveshapedthebasicconsensuseson5Gscenarios.FacingtotheapplicationscenarioofenhancedmobileInternet,5Gcanprovideaccesscapabilitywithhigherexperienceddata-rateandwiderbandwidthtosupportmultimediacontentsfeaturedbyhigherdefinitionandlivingexperiences.FacingtotheinterconnectionscenarioofmassiveIoTdevices,5GcanprovideoptimalcontrolcapabilityofhigherconnectiondensitysignalingtosupporttheaccessmanagementofIoTdevicesfeaturedbymassive,lowcostandpowerconsumption.FacingtotheverticalbusinessscenariossuchascriticalcommunicationorindustrialInternet,5Gcanprovideinformationinteractioncapabilitywithextremelowlatencyandhighreliabilitytosupportservicecooperationfeaturedbyhighperformanceofreal-time,accuracyandsecurityamongvariousinterconnectedentities.Duetotheextreme5Grequirementonexperience,efficiencyandperformance,aswellasthevisionof“everythingconnected”,5Gnetworknowisfacingnewchallengesandopportunities.Basedonthecoreprinciplessuchasnetworkserviceconvergenceandondemandserviceprovision,5Gintroducesricherradioaccessnetworkarchitecture,providingsmartercapabilitieslikeradiocontrol,serviceawarenessIntroductionandprotocolstacks.5Greconstructsthecontrolandforwardingfunctioninthecorenetwork,refreshingtheexistingsinglepipelineandconsolidatedservicemodel.5Gwillprovidehighlycustomizednetworkservicesfordifferentuserandverticalbusinessontopofthenewfriendlyandopennessinfrastructure.Aboveall,5Gwilltransformthenetworkintoanintegratedinformationserviceenablingplatformwhichhasthecharacteristicsoffullyresourcesharing,easilyfunctionorchestrationandtightlyserviceinterworking.Theinternational5Gstandardizationworkhasbeenlaunchedcompletely.Therefore,itisverynecessarytorefinethedesignof5Gnetworkarchitectureandfocusonmaintechnologydirectiontoguidethefollow-upindustrialdevelopment.Inthiswhitepaper,weintroduceanovel5Gnetworkarchitecturedesignfromtheangeloflogicalfunctionandplatformdeploymentandexpandthearchitecturedesignintofour-dimensiondiagrams,thenextractthetypical5Gservicecapabilitiessuchasnetworkslicing,mobileedgecomputing,on-demandmobilenetworkreconstruction,user-centeredRANandnetworkcapacitiesexposure,andfinallyofferadvicesonthestandardizationworkof5Garchitectureandtechnology.2IMT-2020(5G)PromotionGroup5GNetworkArchitectureDesignWhitePaper1.ChallengesfromextremehighKPIFirstly,5Gsystemplanstoprovide100Mto1Gbpsexperiencedatarateanytimeandanywheretosatisfythemobileinternetconsumer’sexperiencerequirementsforservicessuchasHDTVandargumentreality.Eveninahigh-speedmobileenvironmentupto500km/h,thesystemshallofferbasicservicecapabilityandnecessaryservicecontinuity.Secondly,5GsystemneedtosupportatleasttensofTbps/km2trafficvolumedensityandmillions/km2connectiondensityatthesametimefortheefficientaccessrequirementsofdevicesinbothmobileInternetandIoTscenarios.Thetraditionalnetworksystemwhichismarkedbycenter-convergingdataforwarding5GNetwork:ChallengesAndOpportunitiespatternandsinglecontrolmechanismmayleadtotrafficoverheadandsignalingcongestionunder5Gservicebackgroundwhichisfeaturedbyhighthroughputandmassiveconnection.Thelastbutnottheleast,5Gsystemmustsatisfytheendtoendmslevellatencyrequirementunderthehighreliabilityconditiontosupportthehighrealtimeservicesuchasautomateddrivingandindustrycontrol.Thelatencyandserviceinterrupttimeoftoday’smobilesystemisuptoabouthundredsmilliseconds,whichistwoorderofmagnitudehigherthan5Glatencybudget.Theexsitingnetworkalsocannotwellsupportthereliabilityandsercurtyrequirementofspecificservices.Firgure-15GE2Enetworkchallenges3IMT-2020(5G)PromotionGroup5GNetworkArchitectureDesignWhitePaper2.OpportunitiesbynetworkandserviceconvergenceConsideringtheresourcesreservationforeventsthatmaysuddenlyorperiodicallyhappen,themobilitymanagementforscenariosfromhigh-speedrailtostablewirelesssensors,andthelatencydemandofservicesfromrealtimeindustrialcontroltoremotemeterreadingwithhightimetolerance,allofthese5Gservicesscenarioshaveputforwardhigherandmoredifferentiateddemandsonnetworkfunctions.Tosolvingsuchadiversesortofservicescenarios,thenovel5Gnetworkconceptslikenetwork-serviceconvergenceandon-demandserviceprovisionwillbringnewopportunitiestoallthesectorsoftheinformationindustry.Basedonthepositionadvantagesof“lastmile”of5Gnetwork,theInternetapplicationsprovidercanofferuserexperiencewithbetterdiscrimination.Forexample,m
