ReviewoftheMoiveTheGodsmustbecrazyFirstIwillgiveabriefintroductionofthisfilm.Thefilmisacollisionofthreeseparatestories—thejourneyofaJu'hoansibushmantotheendoftheearthtogetridofaCoca-Colabottle,theromancebetweenabumblingscientistandaschoolteacher,andabandofguerrillasontherun.XiandhisbandofSan/BushmenrelativesarelivingwelloffthelandintheKalahariDesert.Theyarehappybecausethegodshaveprovidedplentyofeverything,andnooneinthetribehasunfulfilledwants.Oneday,aglassCokebottleisthrownoutofanaeroplaneandfallstoearthunbroken.Initially,thisstrangeartifactseemstobeanotherboonfromthegods—-Xi'speoplefindmanyusesforit.Butunlikeanythingthattheyhavehadbefore,thereisonlyonebottletogoaround.Thisexposesthetribetoahithertounknownphenomenon,property,andtheysoonfindthemselvesexperiencingthingstheyneverhadbefore:jealousy,envy,anger,hatred,evenviolence.Sinceithascausedthebandunhappinessontwooccasions,Xidecidesthatthebottleisanevilthingandmustbethrownoffoftheedgeoftheworld.HesetsoutaloneonhisquestandencountersWesterncivilizationforthefirsttime.ThefilmpresentsaninterestinginterpretationofcivilizationasviewedthroughXi'sperceptions.TherearealsoplotlinesaboutshybiologistAndrewSteyn(MariusWeyers)whoisstudyingthelocalanimals(which,becauseofhisnervousnessaroundwomen,heoncedescribedasmanure-collecting);thenewlyhiredvillageschoolteacher,aformernewspaperreporternamedKateThompson(SandraPrinsloo);andsomeguerrillasledbySamBoga(LouwVerwey),whoarebeingpursuedbygovernmenttroopsafteranunsuccessfulattempttomassacretheCabinetofthefictionalAfricancountryofBurani.AlsotakingashareofthelimelightisSteyn'sLandRover,dubbedtheAntichrist(alsosonofamlakka)byhisassistantandmechanic,M'pudi(MichaelThys),foritsunreliabilityandconstantneedofrepair.AlsopartofthechaosisafreshsafaritourguidenamedJackHind(NicdeJager),whohasdesignsonThompsonandwouldoftenstealSteyn'sthunder.Xihappensuponafarmand,beinghungryaswellasoblivioustotheconceptofownership,shootsagoatwithatranquilizerarrow.Forthisheisarrestedandjailedforstealinglivestock.M'pudi,wholivedwiththebushmenforalongtime,realizesthatXiwilldieinthealienenvironmentofaprisoncell.HeandSteynmanagetohireXiasatrackerforthe11weeksofhisprisonsentence,withthehelpofM'pudi,whospeaksXi'slanguage.Meanwhile,theguerrillasinvadetheschoolwhereKateteachesanduseherandherpupilsashumanshieldsfortheirescapebyfoottotheneighboringcountry.SteynandXimanagetoimmobilizetheguerrillasastheyarepassingbyandsaveKateandthechildren.SteynallowsXitoleavetocontinuehisquesttotheedgeoftheworld.Xieventuallyfindshimselfatthetopofacliffwithasolidlayeroflow-lyingcloudsobscuringthelandscapebelow.ThisconvincesXithathehasreachedtheedgeoftheworld,andhethrowsthebottleoffthecliff.ThisscenewasfilmedataplacecalledGod'sWindowinthethenEasternTransvaal,SouthAfrica(nowMpumalanga).ThisisattheedgeoftheescarpmentbetweentheHighveldandLowveldofSouthAfrica.Xithenreturnstohisbandandreceivesawarmwelcome.Thismovieisnotabigbudgetactionfilm,thismovieisnotanemotionalsoapopera,oratearjerker,thisisasimplelittlefilmaboutthesimplethingsinlife.ThisSouthAfricanproducedfilmhasproventobeoneofthebestIhaveseeninquitealongtime.N!xau,anativebushmanplaysabushmaninthismovie.Acokebottlehasdestroyedhisvillageslifeasithasbeenproventobeanexcellenttool,buteveryonewantsit.SotheyoungBushmanistoldbythevillageelderstothrowthe‘evilthing'offtheendsoftheearth.Onhislongandperilousjourneyherunsintoallkindsofdifferentpeople,someterrorists,amanstudyinganimals,anuptighturbanteacher,andsometroublealongtheway,obviously.Themovieisjustsofunny,thefilmistoldfromthepointofviewofthebushman,andispoignantaswell.Themoviemanagestobeverydifferent,andextremelyunconventional,atleastbyAmericanstandards.IhavetoadmitIamgladIgottoseethismovie.AlotofgreatforeignfilmsdonotmakeitovertoAmerica,andthatissad,butthismovieisexcellent,itisfunny,sweet,andallaroundoneofthebestmoviesIhaveseen.Thewritingiscongruentandsharp,theperformancesdonotatallseemedforcedandtheensembleheremanagetocomeoffappropriatelyhilariouswithouttakingawayfromtheplot.Therearesomepoliticalovertoneshereaswell,asthemovietakesafewshotsatapartheid,whenitwasstillaround.Alsoinmymindthemovieisextremelysatiricaloftheinstabilitythattheregionfaces.Thefunniestpartofthemovieweretheterrorists.TheyweresoincrediblyineptandsillyIcouldn'thelplaughatthem.Iftheyweren'ttrippingoverclosingdoorstheyweretrippingoverthemselves.MariusWeyersasthebiologistwhoisclumsybutwellmeaningalsostealstheshow,andhisassistant,playedbyLouwVerwayisexcellent,buttherealstaroftheshowisN!Xau,whomakessuchanexcellentleadanddoeswonderfulhere.Whatamazesmeabouthimwashewasaboutfortywhenhedidthisfilm.Thereisnowayforhimtoknowwhenhewasborn,butthemanlookssoyouthful,itisincredible,Ithoughthewasateenager!ShowsyouhowmuchIknow.Anywayseethisincrediblefilm,itismorethanworthit.
