RalphEllison(1914-1994)ContentsRalphEllison(1914–1994)wasanAmericannovelist,literarycritic,scholarandwriter.HewasborninOklahomaCity,Oklahoma.EllisonisbestknownforhisnovelInvisibleMan,whichwontheNationalBookAwardin1953.HealsowroteShadowandAct(1964),acollectionofpolitical,socialandcriticalessays,andGoingtotheTerritory(1986).EarlylifeIn1933,EllisonenteredtheTuskegeeInstituteonascholarshiptostudymusic.Whilehestudiedmusicprimarilyinhisclasses,hehadreaduponmodernistclassics.HespecificallycitedreadingTheWasteLandasamajorawakeningmomentforhim.Afterhisthirdyear,EllisonmovedtoNewYorkCitytostudythevisualarts.Hestudiedsculptureandphotography.Ellison'smostimportantcontactwouldbewiththeauthorRichardWright.WrightencouragedEllisontopursueacareerinwriting,specificallyfiction.ThefirstpublishedstorywrittenbyEllisonwasashortstoryentitledHymie'sBull.WritingcareerWorldWarIIjoinedtheMerchantMarine1946hemarriedhissecondwife,FannyMcConnell.From1947to1951,hespentmostofhistimeworkingonInvisibleMan.Publishedin1952,wontheNationalBookAwardin1953.In1958,secondnovel,Juneteenth.In1964,ShadowandAct.In1975,electedtoTheAmerican,AcademyofArtsandLetters.In1985,NationalMedalofArts.In1986,GoingtotheTerritorypublished.FinalyearsIn1992,EllisonwasawardedaspecialachievementawardfromtheAnisfield-WolfBookAwards.Ellisonwasalsoanaccomplishedsculptor,musician,photographerandcollegeprofessor.EllisonwasalsoachartermemberoftheFellowshipofSouthernWriters.RalphEllisondiedonApril16,1994,ofpancreaticcancer,andwasburiedatTrinityChurchCemeteryintheWashingtonHeights.FinalyearsAfterhisdeath,moremanuscriptswerediscoveredinhishome,resultinginthepublicationofFlyingHomeandOtherStoriesin1996.In1999,Ellison'ssecondnovel,Juneteenth,waspublished,andAllthemanuscriptsofthisincompletenovelwerepublishedcollectivelyonJanuary26,2010,byModernLibrary,underthetitleThreeDaysBeforetheShooting.
